Does anyone know when the commercial pots go into the Columbia? The crabbing has been excellent, however for the first time I have seen, seals are getting into pots. I guess we will have to switch to poultry.

I've also heard mink is an excellent bait and you can get blocks of carcasses really cheap

Roadsend, The commercial crabbers can set their gear 8 a.m. Tuesday Nov. 8 But they can't set inside the Columbia River. They will be in the open ocean. They can begin pulling and keeping crab on Dec. 1. There is a very limited commercial crab fishery in the bays but they are restricted to rings rather than pots.

Hey Dock,

You mean that crab can survive in the trap for that long with out starving? Or do they start eating each other?

Curious??????

Commercial crabbing from Cape Lookout to southern Washington including the Columbia River starts December 14th. Fishers may set their gear on December 12th at 8am but cannot check them until the 14th. Southern Oregon starts December 1. Friends of mine crabbed over the Holiday and limited out (3 people). The amazing thing to them was they only had to toss 10 small crabs, no females, and only measured 5% of those that were legal. In other words they were big.

Sorry guys! My typing went lame. The date to set gear was November 28 not the 8th and as stated in another post this is for Cape Lookout south with a later opening north.

This is by no means a secret spot! Go to the Hammond boat launch, go down river about 2 miles and throw your pots/rings in 25-35 feet of water around buoy 22. High water is the best.
