View Full Version : Drift Boat Loaner Program

Reading David's post on creating a rod/reel IFish loaner program. I thought I'd ask if there would be any interest creating a IFish Drift Boat loaner program. For those anglers lacking space at home and for those who simply have to many boats, we could locate safe, secure storage locations where you could store your drift boat and other members could check a boat out for day trips.

What do you think?

This could be a great way to introduce new anglers to fishing for those experienced rowing a drift boat and give ex-drift boaters (like myself) a chance to to drift a river again. We could also create a list of interested people who would like to go fishing and don't have oppurtunities to float a river.

Now I just happen to live in the country on a couple acres and I could easily store a dozen or so boats........very easyily. I'll even creat a signup and checkout list, add some extra night lighting and a watch dog and your boat will be secure.

I could even provide lessons on the gentle Willamete since the river is only a mile from the house.

What do you think?

This loaner idea is really developing. Let me know when and where I can sign up to check out a fish. Nothing to big, maybe a 12 to 14 pound steelhead, and a couple 25 pound king hens would suit my taste. Might have to limit this program to just a couple a fish a week. We wouldnt want to deplete a natural resource. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I will even happily sign a full liability release waiver for this program.

Hey Roy,

You go ahead and "borrow" those fish, and when you do, will you "loan" me the eggs out of those hens???

Great idea Hookset. As you know with some people today they can get real uptight with there babies (Boats). You would just have to see to it that a thorough walk threw would occur. I know when I was in the service we would have to really get nit picky when we would go to the car pool to get a government rig. The walk through coverd our rears. If we missed something, Dent or damage of course we would be held responsible. We would do the walk threw and sign the document stating discrepencies that existed and all was good.

Sounds great. Good luck.

Loaning out drifboats sounds like alot of liability. Even with a waiver a lawyer could still sue if someone gets killed or injured. The idea is good but there are too many opportunists out there. I mean if lawyers can get dimpled ballots counted, sueing over a driftboat accident is a walk in the park :-)

I'd be interested in learning how to better handle a drift boat. I'd be willing to do the rowing if someone has a boat and would like to bein the front for a change.. I have done a whitewater raft a couple times and driftboat once and 10 days or so in an outcast pontoon boat but i need more experience. I'll go with about anyone who insists on wild steelhead release. I live in vancouver WA

I always release all wild steelhead, but not until I have removed the adipose fin. That way I can keep him next year when he is bigger and the clip has healed. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Plate number BR549 (hey'all will recognize that number)- White Crew Cab Ford with white canopy. And with you rowing I would have more time to catch that wild steelhead. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I just bite it off with my teeth. Gonna eat part of that fish one way or another. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Good to hear That it was humorous. I grew up around many many people who said such things seriously and thats something i have no patience for.
I can wait for the east fork to come up enough to bring in some new fish..

Hey Walt anytime on that spey casting lesson provided we can find enough water someplace.

I have to agree with others on the liability issue. Easiest way to make enemies is to have someone injured or a boat damaged. Rather than take those risks, I'd suggest a "trade-a-trip" program like NAFC does except on a smaller (OR/WA) scale. I don't personally have a driftboat or a sled, but have a nice deep-V for Columbia walleye and sturgeon fishing as well as bass fishing. I'm always open to trip down one creek in trade for a trip up another. Kind of eliminates the liability aspect.

Now there is a great idea. I'd love to do the trade a trip thing. It would be a great way to fish some water you don't ordinarily get to fish and also meet some new fishing buddies at the same time. I'm in.

Hey Jen,
How hard would it be to set up another area of the BB dedicated to trip trades??? I have seen that on some other boards. I agree with Rich H, I have a sled and am currently driftboatless in Olympia. I have met some great folks through this and Bob's board and would be very interested in a Columbia sturgeon for Cowlitz steelhead trade. This would be a good way to continue that. My .02
Good luck and tight lines, Jeff http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

When I started this thread I wasn't serious about the a drift boat loaner program, like others already mentioned, just to many obstacles to overcome. I was feeling a little left out with no drift boat.

Now Trout Myster has a great idea. Trading trips would be a great way to fish new waters and meet some new friends. You can count me in. I've got a 22 foot sled and fish the bays, several rivers and sturgeon on the Columbia.

Think I'll start a new post on this subject so it'll help to identify this subject.

thanks Trout, Jeffhead and Rich,

Hey Hookset, I went up the ladder and purchased an semi sled and sold my drift boat http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif I sure do miss the ole drift boat, and would give anything to drift again, I have spent many hours behind the stroker drifting all the coastal rivers and Deschutes, Grand Rhonde, Rouge river just to name a few. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif I will steer anybody into fish that wants to stay up front and cast all day long for a chance to get some 2 board time, for and exchange for an sturgeon or walleye or steelhead trip in the new "upgrade".

Your idea has some merit

The trade a trip program is a good idea. Back in Sept. when I suggested a fishing partner list I did discuss with several of those who responded about this.

A yr or so ago there was a guy who had a bb devoted to trading trips throughtout the US. Most want to trade Fl. trips for trips to their home rivers.

I'm in. I do think we need to have a few commonly accepted rules to insure that everyone in the trade a trip prgm is treated equilly and fairly.

From now till Spring Chinook time I fish for Sturgeon. I some times go to the John Day arm for Steelhead also. I don't know anything about winter Steelhead in small drift boat rivers and not interested in bank fishing, but I would like to trade a Sturgeon or John Day arm trip for a drift boat Steelhead trip where I can't take my inboard sled.

Bill, anytime you want to go down a river in a driftboat, give me a call. I owe you a few trips. Lets do the camera thing too. In the next few weeks when the water comes up.
