Does any body out there know anybody that builds sport Crab traps? I have called Protoco but they only sell to Marinas, G.I Joes and Fisherman's Marine...and they where not very polite in explaining they weren't interested in side sales (read Arrogant)I doubt if I would own a product that they make, I would rather support some mom and pop operation.. Steve,

I wouldn't get to upset with Protoco not selling traps outside their retail chain. I don't think you'd find any other sporting goods manufacturer willing to change this policy either. It's the simple equation of economics and better business practices that keep these manufacturers in business year after year.

To answer your question about small mom and pop outfits making and selling crab traps. I knew of one place in Waldport several years ago but has since went out of business. They were around for about 3 years before folding, most likely due to lack of sales. I know they tried hard enough, they even traveled to the Portland sporting shows in late winter. It's got to be a tough business if you limit yourself to only one market.

Contact Roy (Bait of Eggs). Look at the 4 sale section of the board. He has some advertised. I saw the traps he builds. They look great.

Airport Crabpot Co. on Old Hwy 101 in Warrenton makes a very fine heavy duty crab pot. The last I heard, they sell directly to sportsmen.

I have purchased my pots from the Wheeler Marina. They are made there and sell directly to folks like us! They are excellent quality, but I cant remember what the price is now....give em' a call if interested and they can answer all your questions. http://smilecwm.tripod.com/net8/images/icons/wink.gif
