What is ethical ... I think it's pretty much the same as what is legal. The bigger question to me is "what is practical?" I ran an 8 horse on my Willie for a long time because it was the boat I had and I had no other way to get out in the Columbia, Willamette or the coastal bays. But it was never much fun. Drift boats won't support a big motor, so currents and wind flip the boat all over the place. And guess how fast a drift boat can go ... maybe 6 knots. I remember the rough day on Tillamook bay with the wind and the waves running at 90 degrees to each other that I decided I needed to do something different before I became crab bait.

Not everyone can afford a boat for every occasion. For me a drift boat with an out board was the best compromise. Ethical and Practical.
