I am looking at a inboard volvo penta 350 and volvo penta outdrive is 600 hours alot, how many hours would you consider high

If it has been maintained properly, it should be fine. I'd have a Volvo mechanic look at both before you buy.

600 hours on a maintained unit is ok. Most I/o (generally speaking) should get close to 1800 to 2200 hours of service. I have seen some with less and I have worked on some with a lot more. Maintance is the key!

My last 23 ft had a 302 ford with omc out drive, sold the boat with 1900 hours on it. Still running with 24oo hours with her new owner. Service often.

Maintenance is the KEY! A properly maintained liquid cooled engine should easily exceed 2000 hrs.!

When I look at an inboard as a trade I use the rule of thumb of 50 hours of operation per year as an average and a top of 3000 before major repairs are necessary. Electrical components, water pumps and distributors cack-out around 1500-1700 hours of salt use
