View Full Version : Superstitions anyone?

Fishing today, someone mentioned superstitions.... It got me to thinking.
I don't consider myself superstitious, but I do think about some things... Like, should the bat be kept out of sight until the fish hit? Should bananas really be kept out of the boat?
The one I heard today was, once the net is unfolded, leave it out.
Another one of mine is to hide the camera until it is time... Very frustrating for me when I see pretty things I want to snap besides fish!
What if any, are yours?

Never fish with a woman! She will usually catch the first, the biggest and the most!

I am extremely superstitious about mentioning any thing about a barbecue until a hooked fish is in the bottom of the boat... Sal

Here's some interesting ones.

1. When the cows are laying down, the fish won't bite. Watched this one a few times and it seems to be true, or maybe I was just unlucky that day at that time.

2. Never fish during a full moon. My dad always went by this (and he seldom came home without fish) based on the logic that during a full moon, the fish can see just fine in the middle of the night.

3. Wind from the west, fishing is best, wind from the east, fishing is least. No conclusion, other than I've never had much luck on an east wind except for sturgeon...they don't seem to care.

I bet many people will be watching the cows next time down the coastal streams.. I know I will! Even though, I'm not sure I believe it, I will be watching!

I've always felt that a brand-new rod is cursed and you have to work really hard to get that first fish on to break the spell. I also used to fish several years back with a freind, since passed away, that always sacrificed a mystic mint cookie to the river so that the fish gods would allow him to catch a fish. A little nuts, probally, but whatever works? http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif

When ever I'm fishing with my husband I always make sure I'm not in the boat with him fishing.

He swears that fishing from a boat will always have better odds at catching.

So to prove him wrong, I plant myself on the bank and out fish him 10 to one.

He gets so mad at me when this happens.

He always asks me "Where did you buy those?

He just can't face it, I'm a better fisherwomen than him,,,ha ha ha

Well at least on the bank.

THINK LIKE A FISH !

Just having fun tonight!

I think I would like to take Jennie and Marie out in my boat together and try some lady luck on the lower Wilson. After it comes up to the proper levels and Marie can break away from the shop (make Dennis cover for you for a morning). Keep it in mind http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif . - Steve

I was embarrassed to mention my strong superstition earlier because it seems so obvious and sounds so darn stupid .... but when out fishing I just don't feel comfortable unless I have a hook on the end of my line. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/blush.gif But you'd be very suprised to know how many doughballs actually forget this, and wonder why they can't catch fish! Probably not as important as the plug in the drain hole I guess, but if I ever notice a doughball w/o a hook on his line in my boat it'll be a cold day in he11 before he gets invited back again. As long as I have a hook on my line you can pile a dozen stinking bananas in my boat, along with several black cats, and then I'll tow my boat up on a cracked sidewalk and right under a ladder with someone up painting from it on the way to the river! Don't matter, as long as I got a hook on the end of my line. Now if you wanna throw in a full moon (not the kind when an awkward fisher removes their chest waders too fast though), a dropping barometer, and an east wind on Friday the 13th, all of that wouldn't amount to a pile of corkies if you forgot to tie a hook on the end of your line. Think about it. Just my 1 cent worth.

When I was a kid, one year my brothers, a friend and I would spend many a weekday on the Willamette fishing for carp.In the latter days of the summer, we would take along these corn cob pipes we had fashioned out of corncobs(well dah!) and those green bamboo garden stakes(bad choice, if I recall the green comes off, stains your lips).
We would fish all day with our rods propped up by sticks. Our bodies tried to keep busy chucking rocks, soaking up the sun, and I imagine we talked about everything.
Well one day my friend and a brother whip out the corncob pipes and and began to (attemtp to) puff away and jokingly philosophize on "how to catch those carp".We are all laughing away at the great show especially when my friend demonstrates that you have to puff smoke on your line. My brother steps up and says that actually you need to puff smoke on the line AND hum "Oh, My Darling Cementine". He chose to demonstrate the proper proceedure on one of the propped up rods...
and sure enough that rod tip started to jiggle away.Boy did we laugh!!!!

By the way we don't smoke,it'll kill ya ... I know of one carp that's testiment to that http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Coming from Alabama, I have to say that old tale of wind from the east, fish bite the least holds true there too. My great-grandmother is 93 yrs old and still my favorite fishing partner, and she told me this tale a long time ago, and I swear it holds truth to it. I wonder why scientists have not done a study on this before. As for fishing a full moon...it's great if you are fishing at night. The fish can see fine on a full moon. Topwater lures for bass on a full moon are some cool s*it. I still haven't bass fished out here yet, but I still have my lures from home with me. Never leave home without them http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif Hey RT, where are some places that bank maggots can fish the Satsop up here in Washington, and how would I get to them from Olympia? Thanks bud.

For fishing I am never superstitious about what I wear. Although I am always aware of the T-shirt that I have on. Some just seem to be luckier than others, same for hunting. Alway's aware of the clothes. Well, maybe I am just a little on the superstitious side after all.

About lucky clothes.......
It just happened one day, that Dot and I noticed, that every picture we have taken of our fellow fisherman, Ryanfish, holding a fish he has caught, he was wearing the same shirt! I think he has a lucky shirt and doesnt even know it! http://smilecwm.tripod.com/net3/surprised.gif http://smilecwm.tripod.com/net4/icon16.gif

So far with the lucky clothes, it's been my red flannel shirt, and no Osprey, not the usual overalls and banjo http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif Either I had my red shirt, or it's this fishing goatee I have been sporting. Not shaving it until I get skunked.

Many more fish are caught when your line is in the water than not. Not sure why, so I'll keep researching.

I'm extremely superstitious when it comes to fishing. My only real constant supersition, is whenever i catch i steelhead, I sacrafice a fly to the river gods (the same pattern i caught the fish on, but never the exact same fly that was on my line). I will either toss it in the river, or stick it on a tree or bush near where i land the fish.

I don't have any other specific superstitions, but for example: Last year while fishing the Deschutes for steelhead, i was fishing a nice steelhead drift (facing downstream), and i looked over my shoulder to see anyone had moved in behind me, well right when I turned my head around, a steelhead hit, almost pullin my rod out of my hands. Well for the next couple of days, i would constantly look over my shoulder.

Also, steelhead seem to only hit when you are fumblin around with your rod or something. I always find myself, purposly fumbling with my hat, or searching through my vest for a new fly or something.. Tends to work too..

If i am humming my favorite song, or singing it in my head when a fish hits, thats the song ill be humming the rest of the day.

One time, as my fly was swinging mid-drift, i sneezed. Right after i said to myself "bless you"... well guess what, A steelhead hit right then... Now i ALWAYS say "bless you" aloud to myself after sneezing/fishing

On one trip My dad started off really good with this one fly.. He landed quite a few fish the first day... Well, the next day, he switched flies, and didnt do any good all day. I kept on catching fish, but he wasnt. He tried putting back on the origional fly, but he had already cursed it, and didnt catch any more fish. Now, if he is doing good on a fly, it never comes off....

Evan, are they floating flies you donate to the river? Maybe someone will pick them up and put a better use to them http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif! - 'Yall, ditch the red shirt when bank fishing clear rivers. That's one thing I have about clothes; drab for low water fishing, but I don't think that has anything to do with superstition. And while I don't like fishing in an east wind for few couple good reasons I have caught a lot of fish during them on occassion. For the Satsop, take the Aberdeen exit off I-5, or take 101 west out of Olympia coming from up north. The Satsop is a few miles east and before you get to Montesano. The Whynooche is a few miles west of that town. Take the road that is just a little east of the bridge over the lower Satsop on up to above the forks. A good bank area is around what they call the S curves. You'll see a lot of fishermen there. With the east fork low you should check out below the forks too. Explore around for good holes. And this time put a hook on the end of your line http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif . - RT

I tie my own flies, so i usually have lots, and the ones that i "sacrafice" usually arent the prettiest ones in the box http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Evon,
If your ever in Wa. fishing steelhead, please leave the fly in a tree branch.(that way me and my Fish-God partners will know what hole has fish and what fly to use, Thanks) Saying the word "wind" is bad ju-ju in my circle, also any fly pattern you only have one of is sure to be the hot ticket for as long as you can keep it.

To catch summer steelhead/fall chinook, nothin' works better than her sleeping on the bottom of the boat with a float coat over her head. Its almost scarey. No strikes in the morning, Kristin knows she is required to hit the floor. She lays down and the rods begin to bend. She even tells her friends that she "needs" to go out with her dad so she can sleep' in the boat. "He needs me!"

Springers in the channel require super hot pepper jerky. When grandpa gets in the boat he asks if we brought the 'jerky'. He doesn't worry much about the bait.
