View Full Version : Select day for fish carcasses to streams event

I understand there's an eagerness amongst some of you to participate in getting hatchery carcassess into the streams. I thought I'd try to make this project easier to set up by letting you guys decide what day(s) would work for you. I'll need a week or two to set things up on my end if it is going to be a weekend event. I won't need that much time for a weekday event. I can suggest the stream, or you can request a particular stream. We have some priorities, but I'm not going to discourage anyone who wants to participate. We'll find a way to make it work for you. It might be a good idea to have a spokesperson or two whom I would work with to help you get this program in place. It's okay if you have one group or several groups. You can email me for information at Michele.L.Long@state.or.us
Also - let me know if there are other projects you are interested in (i.e. cleanups, surveys, sampling, adopt-a-stream, etc.)
Thanks,
Michele

O.K. guys, don't let ifish down! I did the contact, let's proceed from here!
Remember, the fishing will invariably be red hot that day, but we still have to stick to our guns. Work before play.
I vote to help the Kilchis, but any stream will be fine.
I also vote for Sat Nov 18th if you need a weekend, or any day the full week after except the 20th if you need a weekday.
I will be a spokesperson if you all are too busy, but Id love help.
We could even do an afternoon boat parade down one of the rivers after! COOL! We could get people in boats that ordinarily have few chances. I'd give up my seat....
And then!!! And then, we could have dinner somewhere! Lets go!

I would be interested in delivering fish carcasses to Cedar Creek on the Wilson. Would we be using our own vehicles to transport the fish carcasses? Is this a matter of driving to the Trask hatchery, signing up for the S.T.E.P. volunteer program and loading up the fish? Could you provide a few more details? Thanks

Michelle is very busy and doesn't reply much on the board due to meetings, etc.
I think it would be a great idea to e mail her, or lets get some questions down here first, and then I or someone will send a big e mail of questions, etc to her.
sound good?

Zaq came up with this idea and I think he would make a fine spokesman for interested Ifish members. This is a worthwhile cause for our fisheries, and a good time to get involved with the rivers low and the fishing slow. Zaq, I probably can't hike into small tributary creeks with my bad ankle but I can bring my Bronco to haul fish if it is needed. ... Michele, are the fish transported via ODFW trucks to near the site, or do you need voluntary vehicles also? ... Zaq, I have plans to fish Sat. up on the upper Satsop, but any other weekday or even this Sunday I may be available. Simmons Cr. on the Tillamook River is one possible hike I can do. Contact Michele and let us know how to best go about this; large groups at set times and places that you post or individuals anytime, or both. The important thing is helping out either way. Thanks! - Edit: I posted this with only Michele's first post there, and I got beat by some posts. Jen, maybe you can co-ordinate a Kilchis effort, Mark a Wilson effort, and Zaq a Trask effort (I'll sneak a few from the Trask supply over to Simmons Cr. maybe)? Jen or Michele let us know how to best go about this.

Count me in for the weekend of the 18th! I'd be glad to volunteer my truck for deliveries, as well as helping to plant the carcasses. Sounds like fun getting together with the IFish crowd for some dinner/drinks/etc. afterwards also. Maybe we can get RT a little tipsy and get him to throw us some fishing bones! http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif Any of the Tillamook area streams is O.K. with me.
I am ready!

The 18th sounds good to me. I've got a truck and leaky waders. Keep us informed. The after work stuff sounds fun too!

I apologize in advance for such a long post.
Let me know if Nov 18th is a go and I will set the wheels in motion. I will ask a coworker to be available for you that day, since I'll be on vacation. I'm sure that won't be a problem on our end, but I'll be sorry to miss meeting you all. I will be gone between Nov. 13 thru Nov. 27.
It's a good idea to email me with a list of questions, since it's unlikely I will be able to check the board every day. I can give some information here to some of the questions I've seen raised.
ODFW can be either an active or a passive participant in your events. If you need assistance with transportation of the fish, that can be arranged. You do not need to actually sign up for the STEP program, but we do recommend you sign a volunteer form that provides some insurance coverage during your volunteer efforts. You don't need to do this if you already have insurance that would cover an accident or injury.
We transport the fish in fish totes in the back of trucks. A canopy or closed bed doesn't work very well. The truck goes to the hatchery where a tote is put into the back of the truck and the fish are loaded into it. Arrangements can be made for ODFW to provide a person and vehicle to transport the fish and help you in getting them out to the streams. You can also do a totally volunteer effort. It's up to your preference and what you need.
Sometimes we need to have the heads of the fish cut off. That happens at the hatchery and volunteers can help if willing and available (usually weekday). A table mounted guillotine type device is used. We do this so that they are not counted by surveyors during spawning surveys. This is done when fish are targeted to go into streams where surveyors are conducting spawner surveys (they count fish carcasses). We don't want them to count these fish we are putting in, only the ones coming up on their own to spawn.
Access to the areas varies and you can often choose where you'd prefer to go. Some areas are very accessible with road access close to the channel. You don't have to actually hike into anywhere - unless you WANT to in areas away from roads. The younger volunteers we've used usually don't mind trudging a hundred feet or so, but that's the most we've ever done. We use burlap bags when we have to carry any distance. Fish can be put in at road crossings and areas where roads are close to the channel.
Email me with any other questions at Michele.L.Long@state.or.us or you can call the office at 503-842-2741.

I'm in. If there is going to be anything going on for the Nestucca, I would really like to get in on that. If not another river system will do.

I'll be there Nov. 18th Jen. You &/or Zaq let me and others know when and where to meet. -- I have one question for you Michele. Do you mind if I take any full tight egg skeins that you don't happen to need? http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif Nevermind, I know the answer. - RT
