Went out to a local pond on Wednesday and only managed 2. One dink and this one:

Caught both of them on a Kreature bait.
Went out to a pond in White City today and got 8. All except for one were around a pound and a half. Here was the one exception:

Caught them on a lizard, a jig, and one on a topwater. The one above came on a lizard.

Took Jon78 fishing last week on the Willy. We caught and released a fair amount of smallies but the wind kept us from staying on them as well as I would have liked. Dshotting and spidergrubs produced the best.

Jon has a few more of him on his camera. We caught about the same amount of fish with Jon killing them first thing on dshot.

Sandz, dude! how big is that lunker largemouth. im guessing over 5 lbs.
Sandz
05-09-2006, 06:53 AM
Actually just under 5lb, it weighed in @ 4 14. It was the only fish of the day that day but it energized the crap outta us! Smiley rangled that thing in not me but it deserved to be up on the board. And before anyone asks where it came from, Silver.

No hawgs to brag about, but I did get 3 SM and 1 LM at Hagg yesterday. Started fishing around 5 pm and quit at 8:45. All were caught from the bank using spinners and Rapalas. Got 1 trout, too. It was fun to finally catch something, even though none were very big.

"Willy" is short for the Willamette river that runs through the Willamette valley in Oregon, past Portland and into the Columbia.

Quick report from the weekend of May 20+21.......My wife & I fished between the Dalles & Rowena Sat. & Sunday and landed 15 on Sat in the BLAZIN' sun and 19 on Sunday. Not super hot fishing, but enough to keep us busy!!
There musta been a pretty big Bass tourny going on as at one point I could see 8 "glitter boats".... 4 in shotgun range!!! My "secret spot" had 1 - 3 boats on it ALL DAY!!!
Don't get me wrong I think Bass boats are cool, I just wish they'd STAY OFF MY RIVER!!!  <SARCASM>
Anyway, my wife beat me BOTH days AND got big fish with a 17" beauty!!!

Well from your reports and confidence in your skills you should be able to find a couple 5-6lb fish by the end of the year I would guess. But now a days you can buy a disposable camera and get a CD when its developed for just a few bucks and viola you have pics to post on the internet.

pitch HOW did you loose all three of those beaver fish? Are you taking our advice? I have only lost one fish all year and there was absolutely nothing I could do about it- it just over-powered me (I really need to hit the gym). Tell me you didn't break them off!

pitch we can't have you educating those fish with nothing to show for it. This is for your own good: what rod are you using? what reel? what line? what hook? how are you rigging them? did you feel the bites or were the fish just "there"? How long of casts are you making? let's get you fixed up- need the info...........we'll have you catching monsters in no time. Dave

ok im using a 6'6'' BPS graphite rod, diawa tournament procaster HL 100 baitcaster, 17lb vanish flourocarbon, gamakatsu size: 2/0 superline EWG, exsposeing hook some what. the fish just nail the bait. im pithcing to a small dock and to a ledge in and inlet.( this is where i lost the 3 fish at). and i was throwing a Reaction Innovations large beaver in a baby bass color with a light brown back. i mean, i have caught some NICE 2-3 lbers. and i like to use flukes and i picked up a couple swimbaits. and of course me i LOVE JIGS!!!! lets see what you can do for me guys.

What power rod are you using P-boy? If you are talking about the double wide Beaver, that hook is way too small. We are talking about a lot of plastic there. You need a bigger gap than a 2/0. That plastic can get balled up on the shank real easy and hide your hook point. I personally use a 7' heavy action rod, a 4/0 hook and really lay the wood to them on the hookset. That is a lot of plastic to knock out of the way.

I agree with the larger hook but it sounds as if you DID hook them and then they came unbuttoned. If that's the case, my guess would be the way you are bringing them in.
Hook thrown with tension on the line: improper hookset, try a second hookset WITHOUT causing slack in the line
Hook thrown because the line became slack: reel faster, get a higher speed reel (not familiar with that reel). It can be difficult to keep up with a fish swimming right for you. OR the line can go slack from the rod not reacting fast enough - different rod required
Hook thrown just before taking the fish out of the water: Fish wasn't ready for your thumb or net or not enough tension on the rod while retriving the fish, without enough tension on the rod, a twitch of the fish can throw the hook because he get's just enough slack to come unbuttoned.
That last one reminds me of the last time I was out on the columbia. For some reason, most of the smallies I was hauling in were puffing their gill plates right at the boat trying to spit the hook out. While I've occasionally seen this in the past, it seemed excessive that day. Best I can figure is the current was helping me get them to the boat and they weren't as tired as they typically are by the time they got there...

This is good advice these guys have offered, P-boy. It's up to you to use it or not. Even a 4/0 is borderline small if it's the 5.0 double-wide. You might want to trim the top two stairstep layers off of those double-wides, then trim the shoulders inward until it makes a nice, smooth transition to your bullet weight. There is a very good chance that your rod is built for boys and not men. tell us the line and weight rating on it. Bottom line is, get the hookset right, and it doesn't matter how hard you blow it while fighting the fish: you want to have trouble getting the hook out yourself after you land it. The good news is, you found some fish and got them to bite. Let's get them to the camera.

Dave is right, you really should use a 5/0 if you are using a Double Wide Beaver. Dave has some good suggestions on trimming it as well. I also doctor mine up a little bit to help it come through the cover. That is a big bait, but don't be afraid to throw it. It can really catch fish. The rod is very important though, make sure you have a stout stick with those big baits. I can't tell you how crucial it is to match your gear to the bait you're using, it will increase your success astronomically. I guess that falls into the "be prepared" catagory. :smash:

guys i only have 2 set-up... baitcasting and spinning. im on a REALLY TIGHT budget, so there is really almost nothing i can do.... my rod a a 6'6'' medium with a 8-20lbs line rating and i have 20lbs test fluoro on it... o i have a really high-performance reel, hey RAY, the fish were puffing there gill plates to...

eeehhhhhhh, it's OK- it will have to do. You are going to have to set the hook H A R D. Consider using braid. Get back out there and GET'EM! Good luck, P-Boy. man, that's just fun to say- P-Boy, P-Boy. Man you picked a bad name- he he. Dave
