Bait O' Eggs

I fished the Trask above tide water this weekend. I saw a few fish caught. I finally got a hook into a fish. Using a shrimp/eggs combo. No shrimp scent, No Chems on the eggs. Just a good solid hit on the bobber, or so it appeared. It was a good thing it wasnt a hatchery fish because I hooked him in the adipose fin. If it had been clipped I would have missed it all together. It didnt feel right from the beginning, The 'ol tail shake doesnt feel like a head shake. I sent my first Tillamook Chinook this year back to be caught another day. I was surprised that fin was tough enough to land the fish.
I noticed something on my float trip down to the 101 bridge. The holes that use to exist are gone. They are all filled in with rock/sand. The slaughter house hole is now 2 feet deep, The hole next to Bob Holdens (recently deceased) house is now 2 feet deep. Several others are also filled in. This will not be remedied with a little more water in the river. I was discussing this with my Dad who lives on the river and he told me they banned the rock companies from removing rock from the bars in 1996 and he feels the rock that is not being removed is filling in the holes. Except for a couple special permits the rock removal has been stopped.
Is the river returning to a more "natural" state? Is it good to have these holes filled in with rock? Where will the Chinook rest on their journey upriver? Will the holes ever come back? Does anybody have any thought on this. I was surprised to see that there is only about 4 holes for the Chinook to hold up between Johnsons Bridge and the 101 Bridge. This must be a 3 or 4 mile stretch of water. A lot of rowing with a few fishing spots. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif
