Had a friend fish the John Day up from Le Page park last Saturday and Sunday. He said the water was fast and the fishing was poor. Managed a couple Smallmouth (3-4) in the 1 and 2 lb range, and a few Bullheads, no Channel Catfish.

The river was chocolate and flowing high, about 12,000 Cubic Feet Per Second according to the Westfly website. Just thought I would share in case anyone is headed over. Water levels seem to be dropping though.

Thanks for the report. I'm going to give it a couple weeks, then

Crossed over the John Day today...it looks like chocolate milk!! The flows continue to rip all the way down the river.
I did notice a color change in the river from John Day down to Portland, it has kind of a murky green cast to it. The fishing has been a real challenge this year!!

You know when the John Day is a milk chocolate color I go up to the narrows and fish. The cat fish will usually be boiling up there because they can't see anything either and will eat stuff on the top. Had good luck last time it was like that. Just my two cents, but it did suck for bass.
