What part of the John Day are you planning on fishing? I have had some pretty good success on the lower portion, a few miles up from Le Page park.

Hey Pondscum,

Sorry for the late reply to your post, but have been in Alaska fishing.

We will be stayinf at LaPaige and fish from there.

Any recommendations on bait or anything else would be of great help.

I just got back from a 2 day trip up there. The water was still pretty high, we caught a few cats up in the narrows. Seemed to be alot of bass. We tried fishing down lower, and just caught mud cats. I have been in June before, and had pretty good luck on the cats. It felt like August up there this week. Good luck.

Corlyn,

Thanks for the report, It looks like the water has risen alot in the last few days. Accuweather is calling for a cooling trend too. Highs are supposed to be 69 with lows around 46. I will be bringing my long underwear. I hope the water level falls a little by the time we get over there.

I will be there this weekend. Heading out here in a few minutes. Be there Saturday, Sunday. We will be camped out out our secret hole. You boaters know where I am. Cut bait it is (shad). Just me and my boy celebrating his 12th birthday. I will be looking for ifish stickers. I will post results when we return, maybe even pics to boot.

Thanks for the posted reports. Please keep them coming as our trip is getting closer and this is a fish we have never trageted.

No idea of just HOW to fish for them.

Any help will be put to good use.

Thanks
Mike

Half ounce egg sinker followed by a swivel and a couple feet of leader with a chunk of crappie or other tasty meat on the hook. At dusk you might try a glow bobber with a big old crawler about 3 feet below it, close to the bank (within 50 feet of it) until around 10 or 11.

Thanks for all the info you guys are providing.

If anyone every wants to accompany me on an ocean trip for seabass out of Neah bay, WA let me know, lots of fun and always limits of 4-5 lb bass ( 10 a day).

Sorry about the late post guys. We "bonked" 3 decent catfish. All three were caught on worms. Caught plenty of blue gill, and perch. Water is still pretty high and fast. Only caught about 20 bass. No real big guys. We will back back in the next couple weeks. We even caught one cat up river (above the narrows).

Here is my report on my 1st John day experience......

IT was to HOT there. over 100 for 3 days and we had to call it a trip...

However, the fishing was GREAT. TYhe 3 of us brought home 38 cats that averaged 4.8 lb.

The first day was a learning day and we only landed 4. The next 2 days were great thanks to some good advise from a couple of nice guys.

We ended up fishing in the narrows and I have to say it was exciting to say the least. Only bad part of the trip was an assh... who thought he owned the river bank within 50 feet of his location. Guess there are some in all groups.

Thaks for all the info you all provided. This will be an annual trip now.

It is a shame that some Jerk had to be a butt , and think that he owned the bank . You are correct , that they are often around .
