Hello World. Hey I know where to fish on the
coast but I'm new to the valley (Salem). I am looking for some where to do some bank fishing without being elbowed by another guy to cast a line. Anything come to you knowledgeable fisher persons? Or if any of ya all have a spot in a boat, I can haul up an anchor in about 60 seconds less than nothing flat, own my own float coat, all rod and reels ready at a moments notice, and not a bad fisherperson either...hmmmm..i think that about does it...Clue me in gang...clueless in Salem..Rhansme

Hi Rhansme,

Just depends on what your fishing for. If you talking about Salmon, you'll find the best action at the coast. With the rivers low and most salmon in tidewater, bank access is limited and fishing crowded. The Salmon river would be a good place to start near Lincoln City, but you'll have plenty of competition with low water. When the Steelhead show up later starting in late November, a number of bank fishing oppurtunities become available on all the coastal streams. The valley is limited on salmon and steelhead fishing until springtime.

My advice is to start frequenting one river and learn the ins and outs throughout the season.

Check out the ODFW web site, go to fisheries and look at old catch statistics. These have not been updated for several years but will still provide useful information.

If your looking for a open seat in a boat, might be helpful if the person knows you'll help share in fuel cost. It's usually just assumed, but it never hurts to be upfront.

good luck,

Gregg

Hey there Hookset,

Yep I am very familer with the coast after living there for over 20 years. I am just looking for a good spot not too far from the Salem area where I can go do some drift fishing for salmon/steelies. Santiam? etc...guess mostly springer and summer runs in there. As for gas..Absolutly, I always will help out on the fuel and grub. What ever is necessary. So thanks for the info and look for you this winter up on the N. coast . I ll be the guy packing a nice fish ...hehe...rhansme

Looks like you answered your own question then. The Santiam is the best local location to fish for Salmon and Steelhead. And if I remember correctly, the north fork does have some winter steelhead. I've only fished up there for summers since I travel to the coast for winters. Maybe someone else could provide more details.

good luck,
