View Full Version : Mag Hot-n-Tots
I have been trying to find where you can purchase Magnum Hot-n-Tots. Here in Portland, G.I.joes, Fishermans don't seem to carry the Magnum size anymore. Cabela's used to carry them but they dont have the Magnum size instock. I heard a rumor that Storm isnt making that size anymore. Any information on the subject would be appreciated. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Thanks, Wog
Bad news Wog. It seems storm has discontinued them. I heard the same rumor last spring and searched most of SW Washington to gobble up any I could find.....and I only came up with 5! So these will be fished carefully.
I guess if they have more or less disappeared from OR & WA we have to assume they're history.
This is good news. After visiting their website I was getting a little discouraged. Thanks for the updated information guys.

Ok, maybe we will get lucky cause a friend of mine called Storm and they told her that they were going to start making them again this fall.......
I bought up all I could get my hands on too, and Marty Peterson really helped there by having 5 of them!!
Another friend of mine decided to make his own and carved some out of wood....by the way, his moniker on this board is ryanfish. Anyway, he did a real nice job; looked like the real mckoys!

Wog,
Do you use them as divers or what? I've used them occasionally as divers, but always went back to Luhr-Jenson divers. Do they work better? Info. would be greatly appreciated.
NorthriverS,
They work great as divers. The thing I like best about the Hot-n-tots is the nice "read" you get on your rod tip as you work them down the river. I've heard the smaller sizes work well for shallower water and tailouts, but the Mag size is they way to go for deeper holes.

They also make vibration noice and impart some action on your bait. And with the thinner superbraid lines they will get as deep as 15+ ft., even with large egg clusters. I've used them up on far Northern glacial rivers with better success than the Jet Planers due to the noice and action attraction.

Have any of you had problems with fish hitting the plug when it is being used as a diver?

WW, that happens on occassion but not often. I have used them extensively with a siwash belly hook and leader tied on the same belly rigged barrel swivel; a rubberband knot will keep leader against the siwah shank to prevent tangling. I have only rarely had the fish hit the Hot N Tot diver instead of the eggs/shrimp, 40" to 50" away. I think this does happen a little more often in colored glacial hued water such as on AK's Kenai R. In rivers that you are allowed 2 hooks per line, then I would leave the belly hook on and only use one large eggloop hook at the end of the leader. In the case of colored rivers such as the Kenai, I would use a super sharp 6/0 or 7/0 single hook with a couple extra beads to keep the Spin N Glo above the eggs aways instead of the common 2 hook rigup there. Or you can use even more beads and loop the eggs about in the middle of the beads with a tiny dental rubberband so the hook trails back from the bait a bit. That way you are fishing both eggs and a plug on one line. Give it a try on the coastal rivers this year (with a 5/0 or 4/0 hook and only a couple beads), especially when they are up and colored a bit. And let us know what percentage of fish hit the plugdiver.

Hey Wog,
I got about 15 of them in my walleye box. I'll sell them for $20.00 a piece. Great Walleye Plugs.

There's another alternative to spending $20 Wog http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif . Another plug/diver called a Mudbug. It has a square aluminumn bill with little round points on the front. It dives about as deep as the Mag H'nT', but also has rattlebeads inside. It's a very effective bait diver, especially in deeper colored water. Not 25' to 30' deep holes but the 15' +/- holes common on most salmon/steelhead rivers.

Tanner,
Thanks........ but no thanks. For twenty dollars I just picked up four of them at Fisherman's, but I'm sure you had a better color selection then they did...... http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gifMaybe.

So glad to hear that they have started making them again, especially since my friend call and they said they would make them again this fall! Whoo hoo, going to go get me some tomorrow! Thanks for those that did the leg work and finger (typing) work. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yes it's true Magnum Hot-N-Tots are in.....however I only saw RED and GREEN. I've had steelhead hit the green ones on occasion. When that happens I row up river put plugs (not green) thru the hole and 50% of the time one goes down!

I use the green with black back and I paint the other's a flat black and leave the eye's.This has worked great for steelhead,I have better result's with the jet diver for salmon.Good luck, STRIKE ZONE
RT- Do these Mudbugs come in different sizes and colors? Sounds like black is a popular color. While fishing earlier this year for Spring Chinook we had success using black painted divers and even caught a nice Summer steelhead as well. I was thinking of trying a Pink Plastic worm trailed behind a diver for winter steelhead. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I could just imagine the action that a worm would have, wiggling back and forth as it makes its way down the river. Ever try this? Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks, Wog

Shhhh .... Ya, and it works great. Just as with backtrolling pink prawns for springers, for steelhead hook it fairly straight on the 2 hooks, but leaving a slight curl at the tail end. This gives them a killer action! Use some Mike's or Pro-Cure shrimp or worm oil on them too. Fish on! - I haven't bought the Mudbugs for awhile but they used to come in several colors, and can be painted of course. I only used them in colored water; usually in red with the silver lip.
