Alrighty RT, or Bueller, Bueller..anyone? anyone?..lol Has anyone drift-fished a plastic squid before in the upper parts of rivers? I bought 3 plastic, mini-squids with glow-n-dark and green w/black for the colors. I was going to put some of my homemade oils on them and drift-fish them like eggs. Any perspective on trying this? I like to be an experimentor with my fishing, and I haven't seen any of my fellow waders try this yet. Anyone have any insight on trying this? Keep in mind, I am not fishing from a boat. Also for all you Cowlitz River fishermen at the Barrier Dam and Blue Creek who fish from boats....I am heading up there again to my usual 2 spots and I will take great offense if you try to anchor or troll right in front of me so expect some "friendly" advice from me on what to do with that fishing rod. Also, I will be plugging the BB on the message board down there at the boat ramp. I am fully endorsing this site. Thumbs up to Jen and RT.
SSSSHHHHHHH.....quiet.....yep it works....for silver I like hot pink...I put a little bullet sinker in the head and jig it back to me....sssssshhhhhhh

If you're going to be drift fishing them try placing a corkie inside the squid for floatation. Better yet, I just had a great idea. Try shaping some backer rod into a bullet for the inside, that way you can squeeze it, place it in oil and remove pressure. When it assumes it's normal shape it will the draw the scent into it and give you flotation and scent. Hmmmm, let us know if you try this and it works.

You guys rock. Thanks a bunch. I was thinking about doing it both ways, but I didn't want to do it if it was going to be a fruitless effort. I will pick up some hot pink 'uns before I head out. Now, Jim, how do you rig it up the way you were talking about? I have the bullet weights, but are you talking about that being the only source of weight and casting out there and jiggin' it off the bottom as in bass fishing?

He yall,I can't speak for Mr.Bain, but I assume you are correct toss and jig it. instead of using a corkie try a foam ear plug inside the body, they will hit it on the drop most of the time...don't get too much slack on the drop keep in constant contact with the hoochie mamma, any hesitation in the drop ...set the hook....good luck
ps I'll make sure and tell all my boat friends at the Cowlitz to look out for a red neck tossing a squid jk http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hey_Yall,
You've already heard that it works for driftfishing; I think especially on silvers. Hot pink and chartruse green are both good colors. Pro-Cure squid scent is an underused excellant scent for any salmon fishing, so that should work well with a hootchie. You should also try fishing the real thing! Buy some smaller whole squid from the seafood store and hook it up on a double hook rig and add a little pink or green yarn. - If you fish from a boat: What I have done with some success is to slide a rubber squid hootchie skirt down my leader and snug it over the double hook rig, which I sometimes put on a sardine/herring filet. A sandshrimp works for this too. I haven't tried it but I think a fresh squid leg or 2 (get squid at seafood counters) on the 2 hooks under the hootchie would work great! For rivers I either backbouce it with a lead droper or backtroll it with a Hot N Tot (Mag size for real deep holes). This will give it action. For trolling saltwater this works great behind a dodger. -- Edit: Also cutting a filet section of squid body would make for a very good Kwikfish wrap if you are short of sardine (or even if you're not http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif ).

I witnessed a guy and his wife slamming chums last year on a mini gold star green/glow squid when we who were kinda laughing early were not laughing later.

This work'sgreat for winter steelhead.Double hook set up,with hook's about an inch apart, slide either a small corkie, cheater, backer rod down the leader to hook's then run the mini sized squid down the leader.Use four to six feet of leader to a jet or hot-n-tot diver, put some squid oil on and back troll.Good luck, STRIKE ZONE
