Im an avid hunter and enjoy trout fishing. I have always wasnted to try salmon fishing but never have been given the chance or shown how. I live in Silverton and may have the day of work sat. and would like to give it a try. If anyone can point me in a direction of were to go and what to use for tackle I would appreciate it. I was given a Lamiglas 8'6" medium action pole with a Shimano reel. What size line would be the best. Any info would help greatly, like I said I have never tried salmon fishing.

Take your reel and get it filled with 17# or 20# line and buy some number #5 silver blue fox spinners and some large silvers krockadile spoons, then head down to the river. Let the spinner sink close to the bottom and do a slow retrieve. Kings like the deep slow pools so keep your eye out for the holes that look like you could go swimming in them.

I'm a "goose" hunter and a fisherman but I've never heard of an "avid" before. Are these like snipe?

MJD,

The elusive "Avid" is only to be persued by those who have never attempted to bag one before. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If you hunt for them they will always be in the next draw or your alternate spot. If you fish for them they will always be opposite from where you are expending the effort http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif. I heard that a rich doctor in California had one mounted in his office, but that was before the DUMB Avid Species Selection legislation passed http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/tongue.gif (JK).

Do you still use hemp sacks to catch Snipe?

Tight lines and keep an eye on those legislaters. It is an election year you know....

Avid's taste like chicken. I'm a bowhunter and have yet to kill a bow. Hey, Fishy, that's good advise, just grab some spinners and give it a shot! This RT guy has many posts on drift fishing as well, and other stuff.

Mr. Fisherman:

I had to quit using hemp bags for snipe because I couldn't pass the company drug testing. Can't figure it out either, I stayed up all night studying!

BW: So if I'm in the grocery store and the package says "chicken", how do I know that I'm not getting Avid by mistake?

LOL - I've been an avid fisherman for over 30 years and haven't caught one yet! Does the aqua sub-species of avid taste like chicken too Gary? What in the heck do ya use for them? - BTW Tanner, check your spelling again (sagum?). You can always use your edit feature by clicking on the pad & pencil edit icon at the top of your posts to make corrections without having to do an additional post. I wonder if that long word could be corrected by a program spellchecker? http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I caught an Avid once and it was the worst tasting nastiest looking critter you could imagine. It's easy to tell an avid from a chicken. It has 9 eyes. 7 legs and 2 anus'. Nasty critter though. There is a bunch of them up along the banks of Eagle Creek. Different sub-species though.I think the scientific name is Avid - Snaguminthetailasaurais.

I need to make a correction on that scientific name. It's Saguminthetailandgivemasorass
