Went out to Hagg today with a buddy from work. I'd hoped to get him into SOME action. IT was a disappointing day - he hooked one trout while trolling, and we didn't get any of the bass to bite (spooked two mamouth size bass from the head of the cove on the Sain Creek cove though) - and I couldn't even get him into some bluegill. (I caught 1 trout, and a few gillies, one of which was a solid half pound fish) -- two things bugged me though. The lake was covered with dead yellow perch. At first we thougth it was isolated to the cove - figuring people were just ripping them up from the bottom too quickly and the bends getting to them. But each cove we fished, same story, even in coves untouched by people. Then there were fish out in the middle of the lake. Tanner Creek arm was lousy with dead perch. They were everywher! The guy at the boat rental didn't know what was up - none of the park rangers could tell me anything...it was just weird! The fish kill seems to be isolated to the yellow perch -- the only dead trout (1) we saw was attached to a stringer that someone lost -- the fish was a hundred yards south of the boat rental maybe 10 yards from shore. Sad. There was one dead bass we saw in Tanner Creek - but that could've been from a poor release by an angler (it was a small 8-10 inch fish) -- but we probably counted two hundred dead perch today. The other thing that bothered me - there was not a single seagull to be seen on the lake - highly abnormal. I wonder if it's tied to the problems with a yellow perch. Kinda strange.
Anyone have any better info on this??
