Does anyone know where I can get a thread wrapper for builing a fly rod. I can't find anyone locally who sells them.
Thanks

BigStew,
I just rewrapped one rod and built a rod myself. I used the Gudebrod method for wrapping them. There book is only about six bucks and showed how to make the rod holder and use a heavy book to keep the thread taught. Both rods turned out great. May not be as easy as a thread wrapping tool, but it will work if you can't find one. Hope this helps ya out.
Good luck and tight lines, Jeff http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

bigstew, If you are going to be doing a lot of rods and can afford the mfr'd rod wrappers, Cabelas also carry them. I made all my wrapping eqpt. out of scrap 1" pine boards, and several plywood pieces. Only needed to buy a stick of 5/16" all thread rod and some thumb screws and washers. I turn the rods by hand and it may take a little longer but they sure turn out good. If you're interested in something like this give me an email, be glad to give you the info.

BigStew. I see you are building a fly rod. Do you tie flies? If so, try using your bobbin. I have built 10 rods or so and have found this to be a great tool to tie on the guides.
Just tape one end of guide on rod and start from the narrow taper and wrap to thicker taper of the rod either up the rod or down the rod.
I place the bobbin between my legs and using the thumb and index finger role the rod towards your legs while exerting as much pressure you want. When you get close to the bobbin, pull out more line and wrap down again. Very fast and once you learn this, you can fix a guide in the field if necessary.
Just trying to provide an alternative for you.

I am with Gizmo, a bobbin for tying flies works great. The other hand will have some tired fingers from spinning the pole though. I have tied 10 poles and used a bobbin on the last 9. The quick and easy pole holder to wrap the pole is a carboard box flipped upside down with one side cut out and a couple V notches cut in the side to lay the pole in. My current pole wrapping device is made of wood but essentialy the same thing.
A little trick to get the thread to transition from the pole to the guide without a gap in the thread is to file the guide to a sharp point. I have used glue from a hot melt glue gun to hold the guides to the pole to get them all straight before wrapping. Tape works if the guides have 2 feet. (You need one side open to wrap the thread up)

I have a simple double M___M made of wood to hold the rod and put the thread through a thick catalog and place the thread in a bowl on the other side so it can roll around without hitting the floor. I will put something heavy on top of the catalog for tension. I always tie up three thread puller mono loops since I misplace them while I do a wrap or in case I break the loop. To hold guides in place I use tape or thinly sliced surgical tubing rolled down the rod over the guide foot. I also file the guide foot so the thread makes a smooth transition.
