View Full Version : Increase Kwikfish Landing Rate

Anyone get frustrated by the number of 'Nooks that shake off Kwikfish before you can get them into the net? I've come up with a hook rigup method I'm sure will help. I've been using it with excellant success on Warts for a few years now. Remove the 2 stock hooks. Put a long 1 1/4" beadchain swivel on the belly eye and a large treble hook on the end of the chain; try a large siwash when lots of leaves are in the river. Unlike the flapping of a rear hook setup, this enables the hook to stabilize right in the strike zone so the 'Nooks usually get it in the mouth better. With the swaying back hook the fish often miss it or are marginally hooked on the jawline skin or even on the outside of their face; thus a lot of lost Kwikfish hookups. Not much difference with the belly hook splitringed right at the eyescrew. Pushtwist a large piece of yellow foam backer rod down over the treble hookshank, razor or sizzor shape it like a torpedo, and put the hook on the beadchain. This will keep the heavier big treble closer to a neutral bouancy so as to keep the hook right in the strike zone when using it in a little slower water. I really think this is going to be the answer to a better landing rate with Kwikies. Of course, thread wrap a partially split sardine filet around the belly eyescrew and retune the lure to dive straight if necessary. Let us know how this works out for you fishermen with a post here; and a success ratio comparison report e-mailed to me would be really appreciated. Thanks. - RT

I like your idea about extending the trebles however, Ive had some problems as of late with those bead chain Swivels...I broke two on Silvers this past season on the Columbia. Maybe the Q.C. in China has gone down recently, (where they're probably made), so, can you think of another method of extending the hooks instead of bead chains? I have effectively lost confidence in those darn things!!

RT this last weekend I used a mag wart trolling in the Columbia. I used the bead chain like you said on the belly and hooked the biggest silver I've ever seen in my life. It was pushing 20 plus pounds.
the only draw back was the fish had an adipose fin. That dang fish was so big I had to take a double look to make sure I wasn't throwing away a chinook. The bead chain is what hooked the fish and the rear hook got the fish on the outside of her mouth. HS

I got the 5/8" yellow backer rod from Gizmo Man (Walt). Maybe he will see this and inform us where to get it. 3/8" and 1/2" white foam backer rod flexible tubes (made for window insulation) are what is used to make steelhead rags. Or you can find his posts and click on his e-mail icon and ask him that way, then post here what you find out. I would love to find some in a bright red or charture color! I wonder if they could be painted without losing bouyancy or melting the foam with oil based paint? Ideas anyone? - As for the beadchain swivels I've landed a lot of 'Nooks on them with no problems. You may have gotten a bad batch, but we should watch this situation; I'd hate to lose a big chromer because of that! For alternatives you could use alternate barrell swivels and split rings to extend the hook back. Maybe even some spinner wire with a barrell swivel looped on each end. Keep us informed on how they work out, or if you lose anymore fish to a broken beadchain. Thanks. - RT

Now there's a good idea! I'll try the new ones out of the package though, and you can find out how well the fish like ear wax scent. Deal?

Hottamlale1...try using a couple of "O" rings, or any oval snaps that might be strong enough. Good Luck.

RT. Where do you get yellow foam backer rod and what is it?

Thanks,

sorry, I missed this post. The yellow rod RT is talking about that I gave him was obtained at a store called WACKEY WILLIES on Vaughn right past 23rd near Montgomery Park. They sold 3 34" pieces for $1.00.

If you want colors, try getting those noodles the kids play with in the pool to float on. Get a piece of brass tubing from the hobby shop of the size you want and file the inside edge of the tube. Cut the noodle in the length you want and then push the brass tube thru to get a somewhat round piece that can be used to make rags or for hooks.
