I am in the process of designing and building a desktop bench for a friend and wonder if anybody has any ideas or recomendations?

just build this, not to fancy but gets the job done.
Do a search, we discussed this not too long ago in this group.

A tying desk is a personal decision for what you want.
I only have one recommendation for the final product: make the desk top at a comfortable height or make the legs adjustable. I have found that I need to keep mine at a higher level to prevent backaches when I am spending any time tying. Mine is now set at 34 inches; you may find a better height for yourself.

I second what AndyK says, height is key.

We did have a thread before on this. My choice is a solid oak roll top desk. Got one in great shape for #300. More nooks and crannies than you know what to do with and if it's a mess, roll down the top. Also keeps kids and animals away from your stuff.
