Bringing the boat down tomorrow and will be mooring at Old Mill Marina.

1. What's the fishing like right now?

2. My boat draws 32". How shallow is the ramp out of Old Mill and also entrance from the moorage to the Bay?

Thanks,

John, they are one of the more honest marina/tackle shops. Call (503)322-3243 and as for the tackle shop there. They can give you a fishing report and the launch info. Good luck and let us know how the bite is going. - RT

Hi there!

Stopped on the way home and asked a couple fishermen.. They both frowned. Maybe you will bring luck!

Crusty, hey shipmate!

Went out on Saturday for some salmon. Saw the huge crowd on the bubble and kept going to 3 Arch Rock. We went through every piece of bottom fish gear and herring we had in 2 hours. Ling cod after ling cod, some too big too keep. I also hooked up on a Halibut that spooled me and then broke the line (50# tufline).

About noon we got back to the S. jetty and visited with Krystalflash, his Dad and 2 buddies in thier sled. Nada, they said. As we went in over the bar, they hit a double!

As we came back out at 13:00, after lunch and more bait and tackle, they flagged us down and told us of thier good fortune. One of the few salmon caught and 2 at once! The two buddies had never been salmon fishing before and no doubt think it's easy now.

Back to 3 arch rocks for more lurkers. No more lings in the afternoon but rockfish galore. Quillbacks, Olive, China, Black, Canary and Yelloweye to name a few. We bagged a limit each and left at 16:00. They really went for shrimpflies and whole herring on used salmon leaders. The bottom fish are everywhere and suspended about 2/3 of the way down, not on the bottom.

So if the Spotty Tail eludes you, go get some sharp ones and black ones and pointy ones.

Maybe see you out there Monday. We're trying a weekday. Maybe not so crowded.

The bend is your friend!

Thanks,

I will fish Tue. - Friday. I'll be alone and can take another fisherman (or woman Jen) any of those days. I'll leave slip F 24 at Old Mill Marina at low slack (assuming that I can make it out of the channel) each morning and figure on fishing to high slack.

The name of the boat is "Inside". It's a 22' SeaSport, white with blue trim. Send me an e-mail tonight or leave me a message at the marina.

Well,
Saturday was a beautiful day. We took off at 5:00am and headed for T-Bay with two "Newbies."
Here's the story:
My Dad calls me on Thursday and says, "Mike, I really need some help on this Saturday. I've got two guys that won a trip from me at the SEA(Salem Executives Assoc.) Charity Raffle, and I need your help.
The red flag is up by now, and flying high.
My Dad continues by telling me that neither of these guys had ever caught a Fall Chinook. Both are fisherman, but had neither had never caught a Chinook. I'm thinking wait...they are both fishermen, they live in Oregon, and neither has ever caught a Chinook? What the?....
So, I agreed anyway, after all, he is my Dad and what self-respecting son wouldn't help out his Dad? http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Anyway, My dad bragged on me for about 20 min or so on the way to T-Bay, so I figured that I was utterly doomed to a "0" fish day, or even worse. They were both extremely excited. and fished outside the jetty for about 4 hours from 8 until 12:00, and had 1 takedown, but no hookups. We saw 2 other boats with fish on, but both were lost. I was beginning to get discouraged so we decided to try the South Jetty. We trolled the South Jetty for about 45 minutes, then we saw Pilar. We reported that sadly, we had no fish in the boat. Pilar stated that he was having the "Bottom Fish Day of the Year," and need to get more bait. As he turned and headed in I swear I could hear "Flight of the Valkyries" playing in his boat.
I continued to troll the S. Jetty on a E-W heading. About 10 minutes after Pilar departed, I decided to pull in the two outside lines and clean off the weeds. I rebaited and juiced both. I let them back out and went back to running the boat. As I was asking my Dad to check both of the other rods, I saw the right outside rods go down. I screamed, "Fish-on right rod!" and my dad, like the seasoned veteran that he is, expertly whirled around, grabbed the rod, and set the hook in one fluid motion. He handed the rods off to one of the new guys, and we scrambled to get the other lines in. As we were reeling the two middle rods in, the Left ouside got hit. I just stood there for a second in amazement, and said, "Whoohoo!, it's a double!!" I was assisting the older gentleman with his fish and my Dad was helping the other guy, the older gentleman says to me after about 2 minutes, "I think you are going to have to take the rod, I can't handle it and I don't want to lose it." So, I took the rod, and immediately, the fish runs about 30 yards. What a fight! Anyway, we boated both, a 30# hen and a 35# buck. What a day. Both guys were so excited it was unreal. My Dad and I just smiled with a "High-Five." It was a good day for KrystalFlash.
Portland Fishing Adventures (Mike Lombard) reported 1 in the boat, but we saw no others boated all day.
Hey, "It's good to be lucky."
If you want the specifics, then drop me a line.
KrystalFlash

KF,

Great story!! Always cools to hear about someones first HOG with a double! We stayed in the jettie Saturday, saw only 2 fish caught, one of them by a guide JB&Waters. Crabbing on the other hand was GREAT. We picked up 16 keepers from one pull of 6 traps.
