A friend of mine is getting geared up for a trip to Baliz (sp?) and has heard of a fly called the "spanish shrimp". It is suppose to be a great all around fly for bones, tarpon, and permit?????? Anyway, he can't find a picture or recipe for it and I was wondering if you folks have heard of it or have a picture you could post?

Thanks,

AJ

I did some searching but didn't find anything. It looks like most shrimp for saltwater have barbell eyes at the hook bend to get the hook to ride upside down. A person can probably tie a few different patterns.

Those bunny charlies would make good mole crab imitations for surf perch. There is a pattern like that used on the East Coast for stripers.

I fished bones in Belize and fly pattern didn't matter too much. I caught them on everthing from a 1/0 chart./white clouser to a #8 charlie. I talked to a guide down there and their go-to pattern was a #6 charlie with a tan calf tail wing and sparse pearl flash.

I'd tell your friend to make sure they have an assortment of weight--that's as important as pattern. You want to be packing everything between unweighted and medium sized lead eyes. Bead chain is good for skinny water, but often too light to flip over heavy wire stainless hooks. Also bring an intermediate line or sink tip for fishing the channels adjacent to the flats--they're the most fun in my opinion.

Oh yeah, tiny epoxy minnows are a blast for tooling around in the shallows for young barracuda and needle fish.

Hope this info helps and your buddy has fun.
