View Full Version : Summer Steelhead Fly Swap

I thought it would be cool if we did another Summer Steelhead fly swap. I know there are some swaps already going, but I think now would be a good time to get it started and we can set a date a ways away.

Anyway...I'm thinking 12 guys and 12 flies. Deadline will be June 1st. Any style is fine, but no GB skunks perferably...I'm sure everyone has plenty of those. Unique patterns would be great...maybe flies you can't buy at most fly shops or a fly that has been successful for you.

The rules are as follows:
1. Attach tags that display the tiers moniker and a recipe (to be attached or posted online)
2. Provide proper packaging to protect your flies and the mailman
3. Include a self-addressed and stamped envelope w/ your flies
4. The tier must make a post stating that he/she has sent the flies
5. The flies arrive on or before the deadline
6. Should 4 be broken, the late tier's flies will be sent back, and, if it is his/her second offense, will be baned from all further swaps with that swap leader
7. A tier must notify the swap leader as soon as they know they cannot participate (should they tell the leader less than one week before the deadline, it will count as the same as a 2nd late offense)
8. The swap leader must send out the flies within one week of the deadline

List of participants:
1. Clacksteel (Received)
2. D3smartie (Received)
3. AndyK
4. Silverfly
5. Pelhament (Received)
6. Etacada (Received)

I'll play!

I'd like to tie the fly that I tied for previous steelhead exchanges, but it is my favorite summer steelhead fly for swinging, the Black Gordon:

http://karamanos.net/sports/flies/black1.jpg

I'll tie a size 4, unweighted.

Clacksteel -
Before my flies were shipped out I was told that I was one stamp short. Therefore, I was also one stamp short on the return envelope sealed firmly inside. Im gonna tie up a few extra flies for you and get them in the mail sometime this week to make up for the missing stamp. If you wouldnt mind spotting me a stamp on the return envelope, I would really appreciate it.
Sorry,
Chris

Just waiting on Silverfly's flies...it looks like everything will be right on time!

SilverFly
06-01-2006, 07:34 AM
I sent them priority mail, so you should get them today (whew!).

You guys will be getting an extra set of flies to make up for my procrastination, - and the fact that my first set of flies being such pathetic, ratty looking things that I am embarrassed to submit them in a swap. They do, however, meet the swap criteria:

Unique patterns would be great...maybe flies you can't buy at most fly shops or a fly that has been successful for you.

The main pattern I'm submitting is a copper euphasiid (krill) tied with copper/pearl Lite Brite (great stuff!). While there's not much to much to this fly, it was my most successful summer-run fly last year. It put a fish in the boat more than once on some very slow days at a particular still-water steelhead fishery (that shall remain nameless ). On a river, I would suggest fishing it behind a tool fly, or in slow water with spooky fish.

The extra set is an untested pattern based on the yarn-loop technique I tie my roe-cluster flies with. The yarn loops stick in steelhead teeth almost like velcro, - to the point that setting the hook is almost unnecessary, and the fly usually is shredded when removed from the fish's mouth. Instead of an egg-cluster, this pattern imitates a big, fat uncased caddis larva so I call it the "Velcro-grub". It's ugly but looks effective.

Looking forward to seeing the everyone's flies!

Again, sorry to be last , I'm not worthy .

If I get them today you will be right on time, but sending an extra set of flies always makes up for being the last...maybe that could be a new rule!

I guess I should probably hold up to all parts of my own swap...here's my recipe!

I tied a fly that I designed last year that I have come to call the "Cow Camp Special"
Tag: Chart. thread
Body: End 1/3 maroonish sparkle chenile, front 2/3 purple sparkle chenile
Hackle: Black schlappen
Head: Chart. thread

I usually tie this fly on a chart. tube and leave out the tag. It has hooked all my summer steelhead that I gotten on the swing (but that's not saying much as it is only 3).

D3smartie

I want to appologize if anyone doesn't get their flies...please tell me if you don't so I can try to make it right! Stew thinks that his flies are lost and has threatened to contact members concerning are rather hostile email conversation. If he contacts you making accusations about me like he says he plans to please pm me so I can try to explain my side of the story. He claims that I have lost sets of flies in other swaps, but if these prove lost (which I don't think that they are...I believe they are running late) I think they will be my first.

Sorry guys!

Unfortunately, the mails are not always that reliable. I can tell you many stories about mail that “seemed” to get lost or packages that arrived looking like they had been run through a shredder!

If you mailed the flies, that is all that can be expected.

Twitchs_Tackle

I was probably part of the 'other' batch... but my flies were received yesterday in fine shape.

Agree with AndyK, I have mailed stuff to people in town (Corvallis) and had it take longer than things I mailed to people out of state.

Patience is a virtue...

If people question your reliability, don't let them participate in future swaps :hoboy:
