View Full Version : Cutthroat Trout Fly Swap (full) with a twist
I am proposing something different for this swap. Here is what I have in mind
No weighted flies of any kind except for bead heads. No hook larger than size 8.
8 guys including myself will get together and swap these flies on the river fishing for SRC (season opens 5/27) What do you think?
As always if you do not think you can follow through with a commitment to fish together then please don't sign up

well if it was in the salt i would be all over it, but the rivers just dont compare.... OR is a little too far of a drive for me... but i like the idea stew.

I like the idea. Unfortunately I'm gonna be tied up finishing my boat project for the next few months and will have little to no time to fish :depressed:.
BTW, I love your new signature line. I've always suspected golf was invented by a Scottish flyfisherman who wanted to keep the "competitive" types off the river (Oh-boy, now I'm in trouble  ).

Stew, I would love to do this too, but I don't know if I can make it to go fishing that far from home, what general area do you have in mind??
Howard
Stew,
I am in. I checked the calendar and the weekend of 5/27 is good. Besides, I want to take you up on your offer of SRC fishing lessons. So, I need to tie 5+ flies?

I'd love to join but I've never caught a SRC... and I have no idea what would be a good SRC fly (other than an EHC and Stew's reverse spider that I have heard so much about) :help:.
Can I come watch and learn from the pros

I'm in the same boat as S_B. I'd like to do a swap, do SRC's hit on peacock stimulators?

Ok Stew, I'm up for this one if you will let me after my last batch of flies. I tie something that is a cross between a bumble bee and an october caddis. It doesn't work as good as the reverse spider that you do up. I would sure love to learn how to tie that if you ever want to share.

I'll be doing a tutorial on that fly next month

I would be happy to assist anyone who needs help with fishing for SRC.
5/27 will be Memorial Day Weekend
You'll find that cutts are not shy and will agressively hit many patterns. I also never use anything but a floating line with the spider and do just fine.
We will determine which river to fish at a later date. That time of year there are spring chinook in the Wilson, Trask and Nestucca.

Doh! I can't do Memorial Day weekend, I've got standing plans. So your going to have to count me out unless we can do the fish-in a different weekend.
We'll pick a different date

cool, I've got a wedding to go to that weekend and wasn't able to make it.
Did you want to float 'toons/boats for SRCs? or is there a good spot from the bank?
I have a bunch of bank spots I fish but a float down the lower Trask or Kilchis in pontoons would be a blast.
At that time of year the fish are done spawning and are pretty agressive. I've taken them on dry flies with pretty good success.
I'll keep you guys posted on a good date

I can't tie Reverse Spiders at all, but for those of you who are just going after SRC's for the first time. Beware of the addiction, you think Steelehead are bad, these little guys are great fun, especially on a 3 or 4 wt.

New date is even better... let me know Stew...
I don't have a pontoon :hoboy: (this might be a good excuse to get one though  ) I have a tube. I'm OK with a floatas long as you let me know in advance so I can prepare.
Does anyone fish minnow patterns...I was looking around and I saw that in BC they use mostly mudders in size 6-10... This should work here too, right

steel_beaver,
I've got a seat for you in the drifter if we end up doing a float. If anyone else is toonless as well, they'll be room for another. I'm thinking I'll be tying a different reverse spider then Stew.

I have a pontoon boat but I don't know any of these rivers you guys are tlaking about. I will definatly need directions. I have a baseball tournament over Memorial Day Weekend and I have to be there seeings how I'm the coach. Can you guy's give me some info on cost of out of state licence, and is there a 1, 2, 3 day availible.

If anyone drops out, I'll be happy to take their place
I have a toon, and I'm sure I can think of something to tie up. I've had my most success on a large BH Prince Nymth behind a Reverse Spider so I would probably tie up some of those.
You can participate Patrick
I think there is a tendency to over complicate fishing for SRC. There is very little if ever a need to use multiple flies  I have had good success by keeping it simple with a floating line and a reverse spider. Remember these fish are not real selective and so why bother with a dropper, indicator, sinking line, weighted flies or anything else other than the basics

Thanks Blazerman for the offer  I might just take you up on that
Here is what I'll try to tie up for the swap... haven't tried it yet, so I might change the pattern if it doesn't turn out very nice (my fly tying skills are not perfected yet... )

The fly of the week at fly angler online (http://www.flyanglersonline.com/) is a SRC pattern - the Santiam Suprise

I'll tie a different pattern but just wanted y'all to see this one.
Stew,
Has a new date been determined? I just reread the thread and didn't see it.
Thanks
Kim
No date yet. I'm thinking in early June and maybe we can do a float
A float would be great. I might still head down on the original weekend. If you're up for it, let me know.
Caught my fish two carp last week. Not completely drawen to the really darkside yet. Buy enjoyed the stalk and take.

That's the weekend they are trying to organize the Davis Lake Bass Wackin Weekend on westfly. Could we do it the weekend before or the weekend after? I'd really like to help rid Davis of the LMB.
Works for me.
Stew are you still interested in the May 27th?
Possibly but my son might be coming down from Seattle that weekend.

We are sad to announce that Stew has chosen not to be a part of ifish.net.
He has stated that he isn't going to follow our acceptable use policy, and that ifish just isn't that important to him, any longer.
We totally understand that people's choices change, so we respect that.
I'm not sure if someone else wants to run the swap, or what you'd like to do?
You might be able to carry it on through e mail, or someone can step up to manage this one.
I want to emphasize that Stew's departure is his own choice, and if or when he ever wants to come back, [and agrees to follow our rules of use], he can notify us.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not address them on the ifish discussion board.
Simply send it to a mod, or use the feedback form available at the bottom of this web site.
Contact us. (http://www.ifish.net/forum/contactus.php)

SO what do we do? DO you guys still want to meet, or should we just turn it into a mail swap? Either one is fine with me... we have 6 guys left right?

I was only interested because we got to go fishing! It looks like all of my weekends will be tied up until mid July anyway. This still sounds like a good idea, but I won't be available unless we do it much later.

Stew still wants to do this on June 10th as planned. I'm going to be down at Davis that weekend to take part in the bass slaughter, but I'm still up for the swap. If everyone involved in this swap could pm me their email address, we can take this one offline.
