View Full Version : Deschutes in May

I am a teacher in Astoria, Oregon and every year we take some of our students on two-day whitewater rafting trips on the Deschutes. We camp at the city park in Maupin, and we raft the river both above and below Shearer's (sp?) Falls. My question is this: if I were to do some fishing with my students what are some go to flies? Also, I believe that artificial lures are ok above the falls, but no bait. I know this is the fly-fishing part of ifish, but could a person fish spinners and be successful? Any help would be great.

Thank you.

I was alerted by a thoughtful fellow ifisher that my post may be offensive to some of you on the Ifish Flyfisher section so I need to post a retraction/apology. I know this is the fly-fishing forum, and I am not trying to offend anyone that is a fly-fishing purist. I dabble in "both" types of fishing, and I am searching for information that will help me add to the experience that my students have on the river. These kids from the coast do not often get to experience rivers like the Deschutes, and I am trying to provide the maximum opportunity for them to enjoy the river. Currently I have 25+ great spin-cast combos, and I just applied for a grant from the future fisherman foundation so that I can acquire fly-fishing equipment as well. Anyway, I apologize if I offended anyone, and if you would like to eliminate the spinner/gear fishing part of my previous post and help me with the fly fishing portion I would be more than happy to entertain your thoughts.

Again, I am sorry if I offended anyone as it was certainly not my intention. I am still learning the "rules" of the different groups on this fantastic board.

No apologies necessary.

As for your question, I would keep it as simple as possible for yourself and the kids. I would bring some darker colored elk-hair caddis flies because they float well and are durable, maybe some blue-winged olive parachutes, some pheasant-tail nymphs, and some hares ears-- all in size 16-18.

There are lots of great patterns that produce and everyone here could give you a list a mile long, but if it was me these flies would be my selection (and lots of them!).

I hope you have a great trip.

You know, this is the kind of stuff that really grinds on me on this board. For not knowing anything about the context of the conversation, you guys sure have a lot of advice. I PM'd Blueback17 with a ton of information on the lower D - for both hardware (yes hardware) and fly tactics - with both a fly rod and spinning gear. I very politely and tactfully informed him that sometimes people, including the mods, get a little bit twitchy on the FF board when hardware is discussed. That was the gist of it guys. So, flame on.... :hoboy: :hoboy: :hoboy:

Also, there's a good fly shop in Maupin if you want to stop in and ask what bugs are hatching. That is probably the best way to insure you've got things lined up.

The local fly shops in Maupin are a great source of information. However, if you want to pick up some flies before you go, you may want to check out Scott Richmond's report on Westfly at Westfly Oregon Report (http://www.westfly.com/cgi-bin/entryPage?state=OR)

Scott will post a May report on the 1st, and he usually updates the reports around mid month.

I have never fished spinners or lures on the Deschutes, but I am guessing they would work well. In fact, if the kids are first time fly fishers, it wouldnt hurt to probably break out the spinning rod once in a while as the D can be a difficult river for a fly greenhorn.

Fellow Ifishers,

I am sorry that I have not viewed this thread for several days because I feel like I started something that was not positive. I posted a question about the Deschutes River. I am on the Ifish "Flyfishers" board. In my post I also asked about the use of terminal tackle. It was my first post on the Ifish Flyfishers board, and I have not spent enough time lurking on this board to know whether or not my post broke an unwritten rule to not talk about terminal tackle on the flyfishing board because I can do that on the regular board. I was searching for information, and I knew that the flyfishers probably had a better idea of how to fish the Deschutes.

One of the dangers in typing things is that your tone of voice is often misconstrued or misinterpreted. I feel as though that was the case in my post. In my second post I referred to Chromaflage as a thoughtful ifisher who, which is exactly what he is. He PM'd me a ton of information on the Deschutes. I feel as though he and I established a great relationship that spanned over the course of about 6 PM's from each of us. That is what this board is all about.

So, I would like all of you to know that I got a ton of great information from Chromaflage and others, and that nobody at any time gave me any garbage about my post. My second post was an attempt to apologize and avoid possibly offending anyone, and what happened was one of the people who was helping me out ended up getting frustrated.

In a nutshell, thank you to all that helped me out, and Chromaflage I offer you a public apology if you got frustrated by the posting of others because I was foolish enough to post about terminal tackle on a flyfishing board.

All of you flyfishers are great, and it is my sinceret hope that this thread can continue on in the positive manner that everyone intended from the beginning.

Thanks for reading my ramble.

Sincerely,
Blueback17

Blueback17 - don't sweat any of this. No apologies necessary. If anything, I may have over reacted and maybe overstated things. I just wanted to give you a heads-up on this issue - that's all.

I certainly look forward to future discussion. I will eagerly await a post about your trip with the kids! The D is a great river with a lot of opportunity. I hope you guys do well - whatever tactics you use.

Peace, brother!
