Hello all. I don't ever post on this board. I am scared to say that I am what you would call a gear chucker. But I only fish for trout on the fly. The only other fishing I do is for steelhead. And I only know how to catch them on gear. But I do have an 8wt fly rod, I am just saving money for a reel. So I hope that helps a little. Maybe someday I will convert fulltime. I plan to. Anyway's Just was wondering about the descheutes around crooked river ranch and terrabonne. I am new to this fly fishing thing and never fished that area. I started fly fishing in eastern oregon and absolutely love it. I am getting the hang of thing's as far as casting and stuff but the whole hatch stuff still is confusing. Enough rambling. Well I have family that just recently moved to that area. Basically I can walk right down to the river from there property and fish quit a bit of water. So the big question is when should I head that direction. I don't need any secrets or anything I just don't know when the river is fishable or not and at what river level's to fish it at and etc. I live in portland so it's a little drive to get there. Anyway's sorry for rambling but any info would be awsome. Thank's all, Butch.

If you're just getting into fly fishing and in central OR, head over to the Crooked south of Prineville. The stretch of water below Bowman dam is the best 9" trout fishery in the state. It's a great place to learn and most fish will take an attractor dry pattern or an orange scud if you do something right.

Butch the middle section is good for redsides and desceent for brown. I don't know where your folk live but if you can get to the river from there property you don't need direction from me. I used to fish that section west of Terrebon a lot. 20-30 fish days in the spring. The fish are bigger (on average) in the lower river but very large fish are in that section. Local fly shop should be able to hook you up with some good nymph fishing equipment. Time frame is anytime the rivers in shape.
Hope this helps.

There was a shop in Redmond, but they merged with the Riffle and closed the Redmond location. Like Slow and Low said, stop in at the Riffle in Warm Springs just before you climb the hill out of the canyon. I've also gotten great advice from Fly and Field in Bend.
