Has anyone experienced problems with the zolatone paint peeling inside of their boats?

I'm sure that anyone who has owned a boat has experienced flaking, no matter what type of paint. This is typically caused by the aluminum (assuming it's aluminum) not being primed with an etching primer. Not priming with an etching primer is typical of lots of boats, what really matters is how bad it's peeling and how much it bugs you. I had a 16ft. Klamath that was really peeling so I finally stripped it which was easy because the paint comes off in sheets when you use a good paint stripper. Then I shot it with etching primer and a Zolatone copy, the boat looked sweet and the paint was incredibly durable. I also believe you can get a Zolatone looking paint in a spray can now for touch ups if that's more appropriate.
Good luck.

Yup, on every boat I've owned. It's not as bad if the boat is clear coated over the zolatone. I'll never buy another one withouth clear coat.

:yeahthat: If ya check the zolatone web site, it (used to anyway) says that it's really made for inside applications! I re-painted a Fishrite sled that had lost 50% of the zolatone. I re-applied zolatone, plus clear coat (the Fishrite did have clear coat, but the sun burned it off) and it looked great, but I sold the boat. Bottom line, the stuff will eventually start coming off IMO.

MUST BE CLEAR COATED>>>
ALWAYS FLAKES ANYWAYS
Thats why i went to hippo linning. Like linex except harder and cleans up better.

You know it!
One of the worst mistakes I made when buying my first new boat was not knowing some boat mfrs apply the clearcoat and others don't. The clearcoat also protects against staining from bait oils, blood, etc.
On the flaking Zolatone...it seems like any spots not prepped well come off quickly. Then the situation stabilizes.

The Zolatone web site has aerosol-powered touch up kits. It says they do about 14 square feet per aerosol. They also have specific primers, clear coats and all the other stuff. Just Google "zolatone". I’ve been interested but have not tried them YET. The Zolatone rep gave me the name of a supplier in Tigard that should have, or can order, anything you need. PM me if you want the name of the Tigard supplier.
To do a big job, you need a pressure feed spray gun (not a siphon feed or gravity feed) and pressure pot that I don’t have and can’t afford to add for a “one shot” use. (I’d be interested if you find one that could be shared.)
Good Luck!

Sourdough, my local paint supplier said I could use a HVLP (gravity feed) primer gun for my application. After I prepped my boat (mind you, I had NEVER painted ANYTHING except with a Krylon can) I got ready to paint. We had a HVLP gun in my shop, so I hooked it up and shot primer (2 coats), zolotone (2 coats), then clear coat (2 coats). It turned out AWESOME. Absolutely no problems with the "primer gun". Still it was spendy to paint, but it added thousands of dollars to the value of the boat.

How much extra weight is that?

Another thing you may want to make sure of is that you have good zinc anodes on your boat. If you don't, the electrical charge that your boat emits will cause paint to peel and or flake.
Pretty much though, what everyone is saying above is true. Zolatone (even with a clear coat) will eventually fail.

Hey Snit.... you're talking about the old boat, right? Not the new Mega-Intruder???
Yeah Tim, my 1993 Fishrite. I haven't had any problems with my Aluamweld(s) paint (so far).
