View Full Version : Springer Fly Fishing Challenge

AndyK
04-10-2006, 11:33 AM
"Approved by Jennie"

Sponsors are AndyK and Frankenfish.

Contest will run from 15 April through 30 June 2006.

There is only one category and one prize:

Largest fly caught Springer Chinook posted on Ifish from the Columbia River and all tributaries (Oregon & Washington) downstream of Bonneville Dam and from Coastal rivers and streams in Oregon; fish must be caught no earlier then 15 April 2005 nor later then 30 June 2006. Prize is fly line of type selected by winner (not a multi-tip line). Sponsors are eligible to win this prize.

Entrants must announce their participation no later then 15 May 2006 by either posting a reply or sending a PM to AndyK or Frankenfish. There is no entry fee!

Rules for competition:

Springer Challenge Rules (http://karamanos.net/sports/springerrules.html)

There is one "big" change from previous challenges/competitions:

Photo must be taken on the river/stream where the fish is caught with the fly gear used displayed in the photo. The change was necessary because of the “threat” by a participant in a previous competition to post a fish caught by other means (participant did not post a photo).

Here are the complete Rules:

Springer Fly Fishing Challenge – 2006

Approved by Jennie.

Sponsors are AndyK and Frankenfish.

Contest will run from 15 April through 30 June 2006.

There is only one category and one prize:

Largest fly caught Springer Chinook posted on Ifish from the Columbia River and all tributaries downstream of Bonneville Dam and from Coastal rivers and streams in Oregon; fish must be caught no earlier then 15 April 2005 nor later then 30 June 2006. Prize is fly line of type selected by winner (not a multi-tip line). Sponsors are eligible to win this prize.

A second prize for the most fly caught Springers posted is being considered. Sponsors will not be eligible for this prize.

There are no monthly prizes.

Fly-fishing consists of two elements: fly casting and the use of a fly. Absence of one of these elements is not fly-fishing. Fly fishing rules are the same as IGFA fly fishing rules with following clarifications and additions:

Any legal fly-fishing method using standard fly fishing rod, line and reel is acceptable except trolling/back trolling.

Spey rods are acceptable.

Use of additional weight on fly leader (i.e. split shot) and indicators is allowed, as long as fisherman is still fly-casting (i.e. the weight of the line must carry the fly rather than the weight of the fly, split shot and/or indicator carrying the line).

Fly must meet the legal definition of a fly in Oregon and Washington. Articulated and tube flies are acceptable.

Two flies (maximum) may be used. That is a main fly and a trailer or dropper (IGFA rules prohibit use of a dropper fly)

Scent and/or scented fly tying materials are not allowed.

Rubber flies or eggs are not allowed.

A jig is not a fly. If the “fly” is tied on a jig hook, it is a jig, not a fly.

All entries must have a photo posted on the Ifish Fly Fishing board within three days of the Chinook being caught. Exceptions will be made with concurrence of sponsors due to unusual circumstances. Photo will be taken on the river/stream where the fish was caught with the fly gear used displayed in the photo. In addition to photo, a description of gear used (fly rod weight, fly line), fly used and presentation method is required. Location is not a requirement.

Native Chinook should not be removed from the water, unless necessary for a photo. If necessary, removal should be a quick lifting of the fish from the water for photo purposes.

Largest Springer Chinook will be determined by length, not weight; length is from the end of the nose to the center of the tail. Measurements will be to the ¼ inch and shall be rounded down.

In the event of a tie, the first entry will be the winner.

Entrants must announce their participation no later then 15 May 2006 by either posting a reply or sending a PM to AndyK or Frankenfish. There is no entry fee!

Entries do not need to disclose the location where the Springer was caught in the post. However, the sponsors must be advised of the location to determine the qualification of the entry. Locations will not be disclosed on the board except for the winning entries when announced.

Entrants will be disqualified from further participation in the contest for the following reasons:

1. Illegal conduct.

2. Unsportsmanlike conduct.

3. Removing a native Chinook entirely from the water other then for a quick photo.

If I knew I would be the winner, I would make the prize a graphite fly rod :yay:!

However, it looks like PTS may be the winner of the winter steelhead challenge and I didn't win any of the categories for last year's summer steelhead challenge .

Everyone has an equal chance!

you need to get this opened up to the O.P. as well... :depressed:

I am in. With the Deschutes running so high and gas prices reducing my CO lake trips, I may not get my usual trout action and will be forced to fish close to home for springers and summer steelhead.

You guys are all laughing about catching fish if you don't sign up for this... I'm living proof of the Ifish Challenge curse. I intentionally didn't sign up for Andy's Winter Steelhead Challenge. I subsequently had the best season of my entire life. I'll not be signing up for any more of these things.

But Andy, I'll buy you a beer next time I see you. I think its cool that you run these. And by avoiding them, I have the opportunity to catch many more fish.

Mark, I don't remember you posting any photos of fly caught winter steelhead...

Are you going to post photos of fly caught springers, even if you aren't a participant in the challenge?

No chance of opening the Willy and its tribs as well? The only fishery I have in my neck of the woods are the santiams, the McKenzie and Willy. I'd be in otherwise...

Rubber flies or eggs are not allowed.

Is a bead considered an "egg"? a.k.a. Alaskan fly setup?

"from the Columbia River and all tributaries downstream of Bonneville Dam and from Coastal rivers and streams in Oregon"

The Willamette is a tributary of the Columbia; all rivers and streams that flow into the Willamette are tributaries to the Columbia also.

The bead has to be attached to the hook, such as a bead head fly. If it is strung on the leader above the hook, it is not a fly :hoboy:.

"Fly must meet the legal definition of a fly in Oregon and Washington."

"Fly fishing rules are the same as IGFA fly fishing rules"

A bead strung on the leader doesn't meet the legal definition of a fly in Oregon or Washington and it doesn't meet the definition of a fly in IGFA rules.

Springers are very catchable with yarn egg imitatons, such as globugs; you don't need a bead!

Mark, I don't remember you posting any photos of fly caught winter steelhead...

I didn't post any. I rarely take photos of fish anymore. If any photos are being taken, I'm almost always taking them of other people. There are a few pictures of me with some bait caught winters floating around here on Ifish, but realize, I neither took the photos nor posted them. I think the only "meat" photos I've ever posted on Ifish were of a near state record turkey, a dorado caught while panga fishing in La Paz, and a cheater fly caught sturgeon. Please don't take that as me sitting on some high horse at all. I just don't happen to do it. I think its great that many of you other folks do post photos.

I won't even come close professing to be more than a novice. This year I quite literally put in about 20 times more water time than I normally do for winter fish. With some of the guidance and insights I've gained from the wonderful folks on this board, I managed to bank some fish and lose a bunch more.

As for springers, I'm actually doubting whether I'll have much of a season this year. The run looks dismal, I have a list of house projects that endlessly grows, and I have a bunch of international work travel coming up. As some other folks pointed out, I'll be living vicarously through others.

Andy, how many flyrods have you broken? Hmmm... I am beginning to wonder if some of those aren't victims of double-hauling 6oz cannonballs..
Last night we had 6 friends over for dinner... they all agreed that the springer was the best fish any of them had ever tasted. Somehow I don't think dinner would have been quite so enjoyable with my 10wt. as the centerpiece and color-added, antibiotic-laced mush for an entree.

Although I am reluctant to change the rules after the competition has started, I am making two changes:

Due to the late arrival of the Springer run in many rivers, the period of the competition will be extended to 15 July.

Since the Springer I posted is quite large, I will no longer be eligible to win the competition. This will encourage the rest of the entrants to post their fish.

AndyK

Well, the competiton is over. Since I had the only posts, I guess Frankenfish and I just saved the money we would had spent on the prize!
