Well I think I have narrowed my search to upgrade my big motor from a 50 to A 115 as my boat a 179 hewscraft is rated up to a 125. So my question is should I go with a merc or a yamaha? I have seen a lot of people with the 115 yamaha and have heard good thing about them but I am finding better deals on the mercs, dont they have the same power head? My motor now is a 50 4-stroke merc and I have had good luck with it I just need more power. :help:

That's funny. I have a 50HP 4S merc on my other boat, and a 115HP merc on the new one. I have all of two hours on it, but that will change soon. The Merc and Yamaha are supposed to have the same powerhead. I have just installed a fuel flow meter on mine so I hope to get some data soon.

My boat is a 20' SeaRunner. I would consider a 90HP if I had an 18 footer.

Yea I was set on a 90 but I have been told that 90 would be adequate but I would be more happy with a 115  When I load up my famly of 5 and all of our camping gear it might be nice to have the extra power I think. Thanks paddle for the responce.

The 115 Merc and 115 Yamaha do share the same power head.

That is what I thought I know my 50 has a yamaha powerhead I then heard that merc had come up with its own 4-stroke technology.

Just stay with silver and you'll be fine. The black max is not that "max".

you don't need a bigger boat to go with that motor

Made a lot of calls I am now confused as ever  The 115 could be to heavy for my boat might have to go with a 90. :help:

I am now leaning towards the optimax smooth runner not the added weight.

stay with yamaha, had my last 115 yamaha 15 years and not one stich of a problem, there is not a merc in the world that has ever done that and if it has some one is pulling your leg....

If the 4-stroke 115 is too heavy, why would the 90 be ok? Only 30 pounds difference! Granted there may be other reasons to go 90. On the correct hull the 90 should get 1/2 to 1 mpg better fuel economy, while sacrificing only a couple of mph top speed.

Just like Ford and Chevy, there are good and bad ones, well taken care of motors and abused ones. Don't let anyone talk you out of a Merc. The reason people see more Mercs in the shop is because there's 5x as many as any other brand on the water. Merc, more bang for your buck,if your concerned buy the extended warranty and you still save.
