I pulled the screws on the lower unit of my '78 Evinrude 35hp this morning and was greeted by more than a little bit of water. How do I decide whether to rebuild the entire lower unit or just do seals?

From the description you had on e-mail me thinks you have a small leak. I'd start by changing the fluid and getting new gaskets on the screws, run the motor in gear in a tank for some time, drain and check. When you get gaskets get several cause you're not supposed to re-use them.

If it does come to new seals and you have to pull the lower unit, might as well do the water pump while you are there. If there is no and or pieces of gears in their you shouldn't have to do anything worse than a seal kit job.

There is another great site called eye boats, I PM'd the link to the Evinrude motor forum there - good luck.

If you need a tank to run the motor - I got one you can take till you done with the work
