View Full Version : Yamaha T8 fuel consumption

I have just started using my T8 more than I have in the past. The first 9 months I put 11 hours on it but, just yesterday I put 9 hours on it. I have the kicker plumbed into the the main tank so I don't have a good Idea what my burn rate is.

So to the question, do you know what your consumption rate is with the T8 or do you have a rule of thumb? I know there are a lot of variables to consider but I am just looking some ballpark numbers based on your experiences.

I know someone has a rule of thumb.

trolling I assume 1/2 gal per hour (salmo speeds) pushing 7K lbs in Salt.

I have a navman flo meter for the main and my assumptions work pretty well..FOR ME

Thanks Tomictime, I also have a flow meter on the main but need to estimate the kicker usage so I don't run out. We keep the boat in the water most of the time. Fortunately, it's quite a while between fill ups.

For an accurate method of determining your personal fuel usage, why not just hook up to your Yamaha tank for 3 or 4 hours of trolling at your own trolling rate and measure the amount used?
A "rule of thumb" would be hard to factor with so many variables involved.

GSD,

I don't have a separate tank. Although, after seeing all of the talk about bad gas I have thought about getting one but haven't yet.

That's probably the best insurance a guy can get to limp back to the ramp or keep your nose towards the swells waiting for help when some meth head decides to fill your tank up with water :twocents:

I really like running a separate tank for the T-8 for the reasons mentioned above.

I found that I use about 2 gallons in a day of heavy backtrolling or as little as 1 gallon per day slow trolling in slack water. I actually got out of the habit of filling the tank because the 7 gallon kicker tank ran and ran and ran and... ran out after a few trips. So I'm back to topping it off frequently. But at least with a separate tank I was able to disconnect the fuel hose from the big motor long enough to pump a gallon of gas to the kicker tank (and could reverse the process if needed).

Thanks guys, I think I will be looking for a small tank, probably as a backup. Having the boat moored I think that using the main tank is the way to go when everything is working but I like insurance when it's cheap.
