We have heard some news locally about Red Tide here in WA...are there any problems with that in Newport, Oregon area right now? Does that affect only clams, scallops etc or are crab also affected...we are leaving Sat for vacation down there, any word on what they are catching? Thanks. Joyce

Red Tide is the name for a bacteria or something that is in the water at times, and it makes it very dangerous to eat shellfish, 2 people are in serious condition at the hospital up here in Tacoma from it...I think it only affects clams, scallops etc but I am not sure...I was just trying to check it out before I get down to Newport for vacation on Saturday.

The last report I read had the whole coast open to harvest of shellfish. You can check on the Oregon Dept. of Agriculture's web page or dial up their shellfish hotline at (503)986-4728. Good clammin' to ya'!
