That's the nicest bunch of guys you'd ever want to meet on a river http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif . If you are not a regular bring a helmut, and both a literal and figurative "flack" jacket! The cruelest and most indignant thing that ever happened to me while fishing occured there several years ago. I was recovering from foot surgery with a cast on my foot and up to below my knee. I got there early, because I couln't hike the rivers in that condition, and wanted to get a good spot; which I did right in the zone. I hobbled over with a camping chair and fishing gear and fished the outgoing tide (with my chair right at water's edge) as the crowds continued to show up. It became shoulder to shoulder fishing. As the tide went out there became enough room for guys to slowly crowd right in front of me so I couldn't even see the water (I would have moved the chair down with the tide but it was too angled and soft to do that). I grumbled about it and cast right over their heads and the locals just turned around and gave me a dirty look. Cold man! Never forgotten that and the lasting impression of some local fishermen in that area (I know there are good people around there too, but they weren't around among the 40 or so fishermen that day). They had the audacity to crowd out a guy crippled in a cast that had gotten there first! Ugly. Unforgetable. - RT

A fishin' buddy of mine always sez, "These salmon bring out an ugly crowd!"

Jeez, what's up with that?

If it is meat that they want, why don't they just go to the store.

I figure with my total investment in sport fishing, salmon would cost me now about $100.00 a pound. I could sell my sled and fill my freezer for years. I've never understood people that would kill over one fish...

Is it really that bad at the Nasty-Stucka?

Truth is...it is that bad, however, the group at the PC boat ramp don't ruin the whole river...just that spot. At least they don't follow the fish upriver or fish steelhead! http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif Last year the Sherriff's cadet went down there to check on tags, alone. (bad idea) The group politely told the cop to get the $#%&*#@! out of there and that he wasn't welcome, he left. (good idea) It was shortly thereafter that OSP set up a little "sting operation" and busted a bunch of the yahoo's that frequent that place. They just return though...too bad, should shut that place down!

It always amazes me when I'll go two or three days in a row, and see some of the locals take out a limit of fish....and then the next time I go, two weeks later, the same guys take out another limit of fish. I guess they must just fish when I'm there, because otherwise they would definitely have too many fish on their tags, if they fished all the time!!!!

While at times, I squeeze out on the point, I prefer to corky fish just on the upriver side, as close to the end as possible. When the fish are moving, they come barrelling around that corner tight against the bank.

Oh yeah, and I try to be there no later than 4am.

Marty,
I know you take clients on the Nestucca for steelhead but truth is, I just avoid the river completely. I fished the area you are talking about once in college and had a really bad experience. Luckily I wasn't alone but to say the least we were outnumbered. That soured me on the whole area. Sad, since I know that those guys aren't necessarily all from there and yet they give the whole area a really bad reputation. My parents live in Netarts so I'm fishing down there a lot. I guess I have just given up going south and have found just as much good fishing from the Trask on up. That's why I like the idea of the Ifish decals. I think it will help bring fisherman together on the water. That is what the Pacific City guys have, just in a negative way...

I agree there are people that fish pc ramp that make it so hard to fish that you dont come back to fish again. It is fishing at its worst yelling, screaming, cussing ect but the fish are big they fight hard and none of us like to fish there, but we still go.

Even the most rude have their moments, Last year at the PC ramp I watched a young kid hook a nice fish and begin the battle. Everyone reeled up and stood back and watched this kid offering lots of encouragement and advice, When the fish was netted lots of cheers and whoops and way to to go kid. So not all that goes on at the PC ramp is bad. Anyone have a little kid suit I could borrow?

I haven't fished the boat ramp arer in over 15 years and it was bad then. I don't care if you could gurantee me two chrome 45 pounder hens with long tail sea lice that were bleading out the gills from the hook set I would not fish there. There are just too many options available for other places to fish.
Don't get me wrong, I keep my share of fish, but Fishing is about more than just catching. If I can't have a good time I would rather stay home and organize my sock drawer.

I fished there one day ago about 13 years ago and it was the my first experience with corkie snagging. I had two strikes and came up with white belly scales both times. First time was an accident the second was snagging. I packed up and never went back. Are they still doing the same practice? If the crowd has gotten as rough as it sounds they probably are.

Where exactly is the PC boat ramp? I went to the Nestucca a few weeks ago but don't know what everyone is referring to. I generally get along well and hopefully would not have another ugly story to add to the list.

Thanks,

Dave

Go to downtown PC go west over bridge turn left follow road to parking lot on left you will see it. Good luck with the friendly folks on the point. Over the years its been interesting to see what will happen when the fish are in. Some days downright ugly--other days just a lot of people- it just is not the same friendly types I usually find in the Tillamook area.I only go to PC when my cousin wants to fish there- otherwise there are other places to fish and enjoy life.
