View Full Version : Value of Sardines
If sardines are s valueable source of food for mature and maturing salmon should we allow commercial harvest? As I see it this is one step. Sure Ocean conditions are improving with more forage fish maybe that can give the stocks the required boost until the dreaded "EL N" returns.

Crusty
I believe your on the right track. When our commercial fishermen overharvest sardines, herring and other food forage items the pressure on our small salmon, steelhead and cutthroat increases. It is one of the overlooked areas in the food chain that makes a big difference. Guess who we get the information of the health of these fish stocks from.....Commercial fishermen !! I was once told by a science teacher that there was no such thing as a true 'sardine'. He said this is a term used to describe a variety of small schooling bait fish in the saltchuck. There are supposed to be many different species of small-ish fish that all fit into this category.Anyone heard of this ???
