I wouldn't. I've heard that unless you've been using it all along it's not a good idea to change out. Synthetics can cause oil leaks in high mileage engines.

Hey thanks for reply. I guess i will use what is recommended for the motor.
But, it couldn't hurt to try. I got my boat with 550 hours showing on the meter, and at 900 it doesn't burn or leak any oil. I use Mobil 1 10-30, soon to go to Rotella T 5-40. When my exhaust manifolds finally got stuck tight with rust, I overheated real nicely on the way back in to port. Never noticed until I drained the bilge and it ran green. I believe the synthetic may have saved this engine.

Seem to recall an issue with synthetic oils holding more water, causes increased engine wear. Better look into that, could be a problem with an occasional use motor. Maybe it isn't a problem now?
There are a lot of myths floating around about syn oil, but this is the first time I have heard about water retention.

Synthetic oil is superflous.

I can't be spreading myths now, had to catch up. Last time I dealt with synth oil was in rotax engines for exp aircraft. Much different application than non-jetski marine motors. At that time people were concerned about synth oil being more able to suspend water from condensation via breather or from coolant (if you had water cooling). Many lacked any rust inhibitor as well. It wasn't a "don't use it" situation, but something to be aware of.
However, just read that amsoil, probably others, have marine application synth oil with rust inhibitor. If I were to go that route I'd pay good attention to that aspect.

I use sythetic mercrusier oil for my v-6 in my Trophy. Works fine. Here is an info line on Amsoil . I use it my deisel. Just for a thought!
New AMSOIL Formula 4-StrokeŽ Marine Synthetic Motor Oils are premium quality synthetic formulations engineered for the harsh operating conditions of marine environments. They withstand the intense mechanical activity of continuous, high RPM operation to deliver superior viscosity protection. Formula 4-StrokeŽ Marine Synthetic Motor Oils are specially fortified with a heavy treatment of advanced additives that protect motors against wear, rust and deposits, and they excel in both high horsepower applications and all-day trolling conditions (see four-ball wear chart).
Check thru your Mercury,Yamaha,and Johnson sites, every one is using a synthetic oil. Forget the myths.

Hey thanks for the info. I think I will stick with the same oil because I know that it will work just fine, and I dont want to mess up the motor.
If you got something that works, stay with it.
Good Luck;
