I thought I stepped back in time today when I fished one of the smaller hatchery supplied streams. It looked like one of the Alaska streams you see bears eating fish from WITH OUT THE BEARS!!! The water was low and clear and you could see every fish in the stream......OH my god what a cool site!! There were so many fish in the stream they were running into me while I was sight fishing the other fish....Yahooie http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif. I was able to catch my limit of fish somehow http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif.
Can't tell you where but it was on the Olympic Peninsula. You will know it when you find it http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif. Clue : It was silver salmon not the pesky kings.

That's great to hear Marty! Healthier runs this year. And thanks for really narrowing the spot down for us http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif . I think I might know where it is - you showed me too much http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/tongue.gif .

Gee Marty, that narrows it down a little more! Let's see, there are how many rivers that start with a Q on the Pen? Same with rivers starting with a K up in B.C. I remember looking at all those little rivers driving up to your place so at least I know about where you're refering. I thought you might have been fishing the lower Duc or Bogie, with all those fish that were rolling around in the Q pool down there that day. Take it easy on those little fishies http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif . - Steve

Next hint http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif There was even a small town with the same name. Small fishies..hehe Need your running shoes on to keep up with them in the low water as they don't stay in the holes.

Marty,

Do you still have to fish your way around the HORDES of chums? They were so thick in there a week ago, that you had to fight your way through them to get to the silvers.

Boy those silvers ARE hot when you hook them, aren't they. Hot little chromers fresh from the saltchuck. But, boy, there's a lot of snaggin' going on there. With the fish so easily spotted, and with so little water to work with, they don't stand much of a chance against the snaggers. They CAN be caught with a little stealth and low-water techniques, but I was only able to fair hook about 4 out of 15 or so. The rest were foul-hooked and that was TRYING not to snag them. Lost a lot of gear on those damn Chums, but it paid off eventually.

Keep after em' Marty........

Fish on.......

You are correct and have obviously been there. Did you go down from the hiway or go in from below? I caught more chums than I cared to trying for the silvers grrrrr and they got my gear too. The last silver I caught had a treble on the side and a red gammie in its tail which I didn't see before the clubbing....sheesh dangerous fish to catch. The fish are all over on the river so a little moving downstream allowed some underpressured water http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif. Every rock had fish behind it which was fun to see even in low water despite the snagging. I do wish they didn't have the selective gear restriction which would make it easier for the legal guys. The snaggers were snagging with no regard to the rules. I broke my Lamiglass ten minutes into the day when my spinner came back from the tree, so I was really struggling for awhile with a borrowed spinning setup. I would hook into the chums and have line around my reel handle and good by gear http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif....I hate fishing small water with unfamiliar spinning gear. Had a blast with all the "litte" fishies. I have to work most of the rest of the week, but next week vacation starts for two weeks http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif....Salmon beware!!

Marty,

I started down below, and worked my way up quite a ways to find some holes without snaggers on them. Found one hole that had probably 2-300 chums and maybe 30-40 silvers tucked into it. After moving way back from the hole for a few minutes, I was able to get a couple of silvers to bite by swimming a black jig through the bunch. I picked out one fat buck and bopped him in the nose about a dozen times. After enough pestering, he finally grabbed the jig and shot upstream at an estimated 250 mph! After letting the hole simmer down for 10 minutes or so, and hoping none of the snagging crowd cam along, I was able to get a hen to grab the jig after bugging her with it for 10-15 casts. The buck was a nice, fat 9-10 lb'er, the hen was about 6-7.

Did you go in from up above? If so, how's the water look below the bridge? Was thinking I might try the upper section next time out, if I can get up there again. Have fun, and look out for those big, ugly chums!!

Fish on.......

Hey, dcrz, is that you?! How've ya been? Glad to see a post from you. You'll notice that Marty was really careful not to tell anyone it's the Dungeness R., because that starts with a D, not a Q. Right? BTW, I'm selling my SS; if you know anyone interested in whuppin' Vettes let 'em know. - Steve

Hehe RT
It isn't the Dungy!! That doesn't open until Oct 16. Its about a 45 minutes east of that. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif Besides I said Q!!! and you didn't cross that many with a Q when you came. The other Q's are to the West. Come on dig out the map and find it....its stacked

Dan
The water is pretty decent coming down with some nice pools, but still to dam low. Most of the chums are in the slower flows so its not quite as bad in the faster slots. There is a real nice trail that follows along it so just keep going until you have to cross and that will eliminate the majority of crowd. Saw some kids that were hooked up on some chums and they were just tickled pink even though it was snagged....Oh well looked like they were trying with their bobber and worms.

Chris
I had several strikes on a spinner #3 and my buddy caught his fish on one. I switched to swimming a small jig with burgandy body for one (donated to a chum) and a black marabou grub jig for the other. (DAN) Great minds think a like http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif There are so many fish you will inadvertenly hook some big chums with your jig, so bring a bunch of them. I cringed everytime the dam chums swam by. I tied a spoon on for the walk out so people thought I was tossing that... hehe
I did show one fella what I was using when I ran through his hole to land my fish.

I think everybody knows about this run by now. Hey Chris hows fishing locally? I caught a cutthrout the other night and released him. Had eggs in his mouth. I caught a nice buck steelhead down in Oregon Labor Day weekend on the freshet. Study hard at CWU. Fish the Sky or Green for some summer steelies on your way over.

Thanks guys..

stealheadman,
I have given up on the local spot because the indians came down and gave me a hard time. They also netted it on Saturday, the day it closed for sport fishing and that makes me mad. Thanks for the luck I think I will need it. I am looking forard to the Yakima. Well, hope your doing well.
