Okay Mercruiser Trophy boat owners, most if not all of you that fish the salt much have replaced starters in these boats. We have done the alternaters, idlers pulleys and belt ourselves but in the past the boat owner has paid to have the starter replaced. It is just so darn inaccessable.
Well he has asked us the faithful fishing partners to attempt it this time. One of us is a decent all around mechanic and the other (me) is a great helper.
Any HELPFUL hints (other than comments about it being better to keep paying someone else to do this...we know) would be really appreciated. Thanks very much.

I have had to put a starter in my 91 trophy 4.3 every year and it is no fun at all period.

#1 you must have air tools to do this
#2 you must have the right extensions for the air tools
#3 you must have two people to accomplish this change over
#4 you must have a mirror to put down in the hull to view the proceedure.
#5 If you are fat loose 40 to 50 pounds so you can lay on the deck and change the sucker!

It is a one hand per person operation but it can be done in less than 40 minutes if you both are able to speak english. I am sure there are easier ways to change these darn things but I have not found it yet short of pulling the motor. I now gladly pay the shop to change the starter as it is not worth the stress and bruises for me at least. I get mine out of the way before the first of the season and it usually lasts until I take the boat home. I start noticing problems with it around October and sometimes you can take them out and clean them up and they will work fine for a little longer.

I do not envy you. PM me if you need anything. Good luck.
