View Full Version : Regulation Question

I've looked through the regulations in the ODFW pamphlet and I couldn't find the answer to my question. Maybe I overlooked it. Anyways, is it legal to fish for trout after retaining two Salmon and/or Steelhead? For example, say you are fortunate to get two Salmon out in the bay and on the way home you want to fish a coastal river for trout. Is that legal? Can someone enlighten me on this. Thanks
Mark

Salmonator,
What year is your Thunderjet,(the one in the picture, if it is yours)and how do you like it? Is it an Alexis?
Just curious how it has held up.
Nice limit. Bet you and your boy had a good time.
Thanks,

I've only had the boat 16 months and already have 111 mostly salt/estuary hours on it and I have nothing but good things to say. Especially the price. The only problem I had was with a brake on the tricker trailer. It wasn't releasing completely and the hub was overheating. It was just out of warranty but the guys at tricker sent me a complete new assembly that I installed. Good customer service to say the least.

Don't be fishing for jacks here in Tillamook County after retaining two adult fish. The rule is: You catch (and keep) two adult fish, YOU ARE DONE, PUT ROD AWAY! You CANNOT continue to angle for jacks after retaining a daily possesion limit!

Sorry Marty, should have clarified that. I knew what I meant, unfortunately my mouth (fingers) move quicker than my brain most of the time.

My understanding is that it is OK. Should you catch another s/s you would have to release it. Also, in the NW zone any Rainbow over 20 inches would have to be released. (They are considered to be steelhead.)
Now I have one. Where do I find the regulations on gear restrictions in Tillamook Bay? I think that things like flashers and colored weights are proscribed, but I can't find it on the ODFW ww or in the book.

And you can still fish for jacks anywhere there is a retainable jack limit after an adult limit has been caught. Last year my kid hit an "Astoria slam". He picked up his salmon limit (coho and chinook) after we got our sturgeon, all by 11am. We quit fishing right after. That way at least i'd have an excuse later as to why the kid out fished his old man! I still haven't heard the end of it...

Here is the answer I got from Charlie C. at the ODFW office:
Mark,
I may have misinterperted the rule. Here is what the state police wrote me in response to your question:
The person catches his two steelhead, he has to stop angling for steelhead,
but would be allowed to angle for other species that were open. In this case
trout. We would make sure that he was no longer targeting steelhead and
probably expect that they would change gear.
So, we will clear up the language and you should be comfortable fishing for trout now. Thanks for your question.
