I worked on photographing my fly pattern...I used disposables and digital cameras...I cant for the life of me figure out how to take a decent detailed picture of this size 16 caddis....HELP!

Is there a macro setting on the digital to get up close? I still have to set back a little and zoom in to get a close up so the camera can focus.

I will add the following to what PDXS wrote;
1) White background = "white" poster or foam board
2) Lighting from both sides = daylight bulbs
3) Camera held very still = tripod

And I'll add one more thing. Don't use the flash. It was suggested above to include plenty of light but if your camera (set on auto settings) still wants to use a flash, hopefully you have the option on your camera to slow down the shutter speed to avoid having to use the flash - the colors will come out much better without the flash.

I'm certainly no expert, I just got this picture taking thing figured out myself. The guys above have nailed all the pointers I can think of. Macro lens, no flash, and a ton of light coming in from several angles. Flies seem to show up best with a light blue background...

One additional point. If your digital camera has an aperture or F-stop setting you'll get greater depth of field the higher the number. F2 = largest aperture, least depth of field, F22 = smallest aperture, greatest depth of field. That translates to more detail, especially on small flies. Also use a light gray or light, pale blue background. A white background will give you too much reflection into the lens which could cause the camerea to adjust to a faster shutter speed or wash out your colors and detail. One last trick, if you do use your flash try laying one layer of a hankerchief over the flash. That will soften the light and difuse it a little.

Ok so that was more than one additional point :shrug:

Sorry, used to get paid for this stuff :wink:
