SIMPSON DAM TO BE REMOVED
Federal, state and private participants have announced an agreement to remove an obsolete dam and restore fish passage to Goldsborough Creek near Shelton.
The project will open 14 miles of spawning and rearing habitat to salmon and sea-run trout. The contract is expected to be awarded this month, with most of the work to start next spring.
Participants in the project are the Army Corps of Engineers, which will manage it; the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and Simpson Timber Co., owner of the dam.
The federal government will fund about 65 percent of the $4.8 million project. The Department of Fish and Wildlife and Simpson will share the balance.
The project is expected to produce about 2,000 adult coho salmon, 10,000 chum salmon and hundreds of steelhead and sea-run cutthroat trout each year.
