View Full Version : Fly rod for my 9 year old
Hey guys can anyone help me out. I am looking at buy my son (9 Years old) a flyrod for trout. What would you recommend? We have a cabin out of Silvies and fish the Malhuer (Upper section) during the summer. There are lakes in the Strawberries that we hike to aswell. Need a good lightweight rod for him. Any helpwould be great. It will probably be something my daughter starts with in a few years aswell, she is five right now.

Nothing heavier then a five weight rod to start. You'll need a simple single action reel and a floating line.
Look for a package at a local sporting goods store in your area. There is a Sportsman's Warehouse on the south side of Salem.
It's a little far for you to drive to River City. Cabelas has some combos for as little as $80.
Good advice Andy :applause:
Thanks Andy,
That was kinda my thought to but thought I would venture out and send a post. I have been hiking the upper Malhuer alone and have been waiting for him to get old enough and excited about fishing and he is getting in the grove.... I can't wait for this summer to role around.

I have a rod that I used when I first started.... it is really basic South Bend rod and I have the reel too. It is an 8' 5/6 wt graphite rod. You can have it if you want... PM me and give me if you want it.

Thanks for the offer, I just aquired one from my dad that he found in the back of the closet about an hour ago..... Will be a fun summer for me and the boy. I told my wife that the boys are really going to play this summer and she roled her eyes.

Just a little note here. I gave my first fly rod (the one I
learned on) to lillnorthfork for his son. What a great
feeling to pass along something to help out another
ifish family. There.... :twocents: Arnie.
