View Full Version : Unity without uniformity (sorry a bit long)

Unity without uniformity is always the key. Unity is also never achieved by control. All people including the Christian struggles to control all which happens around them, and I truly mean all things! I know in my life it’s the basis of my worry, frustration, disappointment, anger…you the name it; when it comes from the flesh it’s about control. As Christians we have also become very good at wrapping our need for control in very spiritual sounding ways. We are not even against dragging God’s name though it to give it support, but it’s about our human desire; not God’s desire.

The Spirit is much different isn’t it? When we are living by the Spirit we sense His peace since we are not trying to control life and everyone around us. And I confess I seek my desire far, far more than God’s . Obviously we will continue to notice this trend from time to time in the Chapel, because we all have this sin nature about us (the control nature I call it when it comes to my life :depressed:). One group trying to limit another in what can be shared or posted – hardly unity this in more about uniformity and uniformity is about human control. Even posts like “I only read the prayer requests and ignore everything else” can even unintentionally seek to manipulate one another. That’s a statement from the flesh since it certainly places guilt on someone else. Could you image Jesus saying He would “ignore everything else” in a way looking down on other Christians from a superior type spiritual pedestal? Or would He allow more freedom than that?

I understand I want things a certain way in my life and I freely confess much too often my prayer life is about telling God what I want in my life :hoboy:. But God is always so much broader than my thinking. Jesus modeled so much for us to follow. He prayed, He shared, He discussed, He encouraged, He convicted, He challenged…He even wept. Yet as Christians we keep trying to place God in own individually defined boxes and control how people are to act.

If we truly desire to become to a multi-faith prayer only Chapel, then one of the very first things which will needs to be done would be to eliminating the two pinned “Scripture of the week” threads. These are clearly theology-based; an ongoing discussion expounding on the Christian Bible. They give all that come here demonstrating a clear bias for Christianity since no other “faiths” are pinned to the top. These treads by definition are against the rules of the Chapel they are theology, even though I greatly appreciate the time FM2 must put into them .
We will need to continue to reflect on this, maybe even a poll :idea:to see if a limited prayer only board is the will of the people or a freer open subject board. A pure “prayer board” fine, really it doesn’t matter to me God is much bigger than the i-fish chapel either way. If not than let us not be concerned with limiting one another – unity without uniformity but always, ALWAYS done in gentleness and respect.

i started to post this in the other thread in response to a post from someone who was concerned with the on-going "debates". i didn't post it, i got as far as typing it but then i deleted it. maybe it is time to post it as a testiment to what rimrock just said. not that i can say it any better, i can not, but maybe an example would be good right now. i think that i came to this ng with a bit of a chip on my shoulder due to the dissonance that i feel between my beliefs and my observations about christianity. i think that chip was evident as i posted to some of the members here. very wrong on my part. what i have learned here is something that is very important. i have learned, from talking to people here, that we all have the same sincerety, and the same interest............in truly understanding ourselves from a spiritual sense. while we still often disagree and i still find that sense of dissonance within me, i do understand how wrong it is for me to be frustrated with anyone else over it. i understand now that the dissonence is in me. i have had help from everyone here, even those that believe differently from me, in finding some answers. i also have found that my assumptions of others were very wrong. i know i am not explaining it very well, but i came here thinking that i was somehow in a different place spritually than some of the "traditionalists". i have found out that we are really very much alike. we are all interested in the same thing. finding answers and understanding what it means. while the answers may be different for each of us, the path is the same and certainly the heart is the same. it has been humbling for me but it has been good for me. a great gift from all the people here. i hope that those that are interested can still find a place here to ask questions, to explore our differences and in the end i think that we will find that we are all very much the same. anyhow, it has been good. and the differences between us are what have made it so good. many of you have challenged me, and i have to add that you have done so in a very respectful way, and i have had to take time to think my spiritual thoughts out. i have not done much of that before. what a great thing for a chappel to do. again, i have to admit that i have learned a lot of very good things during these discussions. i don't know why it works better than the face to face meetings, but for some reason it has. maybe the thing is that you can jump in and read something, you can respond to it, but then you can walk away and spend some private time thinking about it before you come back.

Well, thanks for the very kind words that is a very Christ-like thing to do gents. As I frequently tell people in our congregation although, “If I haven’t disappointed you yet….well you just haven’t known me long enough.” I’m broken just like everyone else, but it’s very nice and a Godly thing to speak kindly of anyone so I really do appreciate it.

This is a great post Rimrock, always a pleasure to read your thoughts. Newfly, I saw myself in many of your words as well. I have learned a great deal about listening and try to understand other points of view. I have had to get off my high horse many a time, as I have read posts here. DAB , you my friend have a heart of gold and always care about others. BJS , you dude, are a natural on the boards  , does your hair blow in the wind as you post here ? Your honesty and willingness to express yourself are refreshing. It isn't the chapel that is cool, it is the people that make this place great !!! :applause: :applause: :applause: :applause:
