Just sittin here thinkin today how cool it would be to have a cummins light duty truck engine in a jetboat like a 12V or a 24V, something along those lines. The only reason I could come up with is the weight issue, but there are alot of companies who use those Gimungus V-8s that weight very close to the same such as the 8.1L chevy. I mean a diesel makes all its power in the low RPM range(up on step quicker?), gets alot better mileage, has tons of power with the ability to tune and make monster power. I know there must be some good reason why they dont use'um?
school me?
"Our jet boats are custom built and powered by 460 Ford marine and Yanmar diesel engines and Hamilton Jet pumps."
Quote from a Hells Canyon Jetboat tour company.
So, I guess someone has already done it.
Yanmar makes diesel outboards too.

Cummins 4.2L 320hp, 477 ft-lbs, engine weight is about 1000lbs. Cost is about $12,500 more than a GM 8.1L.

Yanmar makes a 315hp diesel that is about $10,000 more than the 8.1L and weighs in at about same (900lbs). Not sure how outdrives work but you may need to go to a larger drive because of the diesel so there is other costs as well.
We are finishing a 24’ jetboat that is yanmar powered and will be starting one with the Cummins mentioned. Total upgrade cost to go to a diesel setup is around $17,000 (engine and upgraded pump). Fuel burn is about 5.5 g/h or about half of the 8.1L.

Just to put it in perspective , speaking strictly to jetboats, these engines are going in boats that price out in the $80K to $95K range and higher. This is some serious equipment.
