Was fishing bouy 10 / church hole area all weekend thru tues with no luck on salmon and had been fishing low tide for sturgeon with great success near tongue point (5 keepers, 3 guys, 3 days). My brother was using my lamiglas 9' kenai king w/ 6500c3 spooled with 50 lb tuff-line II (description part of story). Hadn't caught a fish for about an hour when I tagged into a 45" and was getting it all measured when the brother's rod went a floppin' in the holder. Hollered at him that he was bit. The rods all a dancin' around and he has to wrestle it out of the holder and then the bite subsides. He gingerly wraps his thumb and forefinger around the reel, to be able to sense the slightest twitch, when BAM! he gets freight trained and the rod goes flying out the back of the boat! I see $300 bucks haulin *ss and I grab my rod and un hook the fish I just landed and make a cast for it. The line falls perfectly across the rod where the reel meets and I feel resistance and I'm starting to think Hey, I'm getting my rod back and gonna land this fish too! Alas, it popped loose and before we could get loose of the anchor lost site of the rod handle zinging away with the current. So, any body finding a rod of the previous description floating around the estuary please email me and feel free to keep the attached sturgeon!
As far as fishing reports, fished bouy 10 sun. eve. and tues. a.m., saw maybe 10 - 15 fish caught. Fished the bridge to church area Sa. a.m., su. p.m., mon. a.m. saw total of 30 -40 fish caught. most seemed to be caught by people using those flashy mylar covered divers, a plastic spinner / attractor in green and pearl mylar and a cut herring. running those out at 20 pulls.
I've been fishing sturgeon in the flats west of tongue point (12 ft. of water) using sand shrimp on a steel leader and 2 oz. wt. 1 hour before and after ebb.
Heading back on fri. to suffer some more abuse. Hopefully will be able to find some salmon. Tight lines to all and remember, when YOU take YOUR brother fishing, tie the rod to his wrist!

Great story, reminds of a similar one with my dad, a big chinook, a broken rod holder, broken rod, and a lost rod.

Must have been about 1984, we had done pretty well @ Buoy 10, my dad was dinkin' around with something at the back of the boat. BIG bite - he grabs the rod, just as it is about to clear the end of the rod holder the fish takes a massive dive, breaks off the bracket and pulls Dad's "favorite" rod into the river. A couple seconds later it hangs up on the next line. He grabs that rod. It breaks in half. A couple seconds later the line snaps. A few hundred $$$ in damage, couldn't have taken more than a minute !

I'll keep an eye out for that rod ... don't hold your breath ... but that story should get better and better as the pain of your loss fades away.

I've caught a few fish that had hooks and lures attached from a previous failed catch, but have never caught one that had a pole attached. I'd be a pretty happy fisherman to reel in a keeper plus have a $300 pole/reel attached!!

Knowing that it is yours, I'll glady return it to you if I should catch it.

Wonder how often someone snags a pole from the bottom of the river/ocean?

Sorry Pal, but I was fishing the Church hole from Sat untill Tuesday. I am on channel 11 almost all the time and remember hearing someone claim to have snagged a brand new setup. If I remember right he said it still had the sticker on it. There was no sturgeon attached. Sounds like your rig. He said it was an expensive setup. Dont know if it was a charter or not and can't remember where he said he was. You may want to check some of the local charters but I'm afraid that the reward for finding your gear is gonna be "YOUR GEAR".

Four years ago I was fishing Tillamook Bay along the Sheep Corral. I was pulling a Flatfish in about 6" of water. I hooked a one piece rod with the spinner still attached! I still fish with it today.

I remember a few years ago when a group of us went out over the Columbia bar fishing for chinook. The guy we went with used those cheap rod holders. We weren't out on the water long when his rod bent over double. Just as he reached for the rod to pull it out of the holder, BOOM!!, the rod holder breaks. Over the side goes the rod, reel, line, huge fish, etc. We all sit there in stunned silence for a moment. Then the guy who just lost everything says,"Damn, I hate when that happens". http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif
