ok ill admit it I CANT SALMON FISH!!!!!!! I have an excuse though- Im a teenager!!! My dad never really taught me (he dosent know how, and i typically kill him fishing anyways!) so can the people out there on this great bb tell me about it ie rigging, different rigs, weight, and other stuff that pertains to it. I know this is probably annoying having totally ignorant person asking questions that you thought everyone knew, but i want to learn. I wouldnt mind if only one person responded thatd be cool, just help me out, i wanna catch a salmon or something like that before they are out of the bay. If anyone responds to this REMEMBER i know nothing about the rigs, if you just give me the name of a rig itd be like teaching a 2 year old algebra...POINTLESS!!pics would help alot too. I do know how to bass and trout fish so im not a total lost cause.peace out hommies

Winterkill: It's great to see young people getting envolved in this sport. The best advise I can give you is to visit a local sporting goods store and ask for help. They can then show the rigs and rigging based on where you want to fish. There are many different ways to fish for salmon depending on where you fish. Bank or boat require some different rigs and rods.

Also, if there is a local club, visit them and join.

The other option is to visit your local library and see if they have back copies of Salmon, Trout, Steelhead, a bimonthly fishing magazine. Look throught the back issues. If all else fails, hire a guide for the water you want to fish and tell him/her up front that you want to LEARN how to fish, not just go on a fishing trip.

Good Luck and if you have a specific question feel free to email me.

Hey man,

Best advice to start off before you hit the rivers where the guys are is to go down to the local library and check out different salmon fishing books, and also, just do a search on Yahoo! or alta vista, or a gang of other search engines on the web. After that's said and done, get hands on experience by practicing what you read on the sites and/or books, and then hit the rivers or ocean, and just ask a guy that's taking a break. Remember to be polite and courteous, and it wouldn't hurt to bring a cup of coffee to offer in return for his/her services. There are plenty of river-drifting fishing sites out there...just look for 'em. I kill my dad in fishing too so I feel your pain...muh ha ha ha ha

Great replies people. Thanks from me too. WK, in addition to the above, read thru specific tech subjects on this BB and the old DB to learn a lot of things that will help you. You will go thru a stage of fishing that is very exciting; the learning of new things and having them pay off in the thrill and rewards of the catch. Let us know how you are doing from time to time. Good luck. - RT - P.S. Remember Grant that I want to learn some things about the Siletz from you on 9/19 (or whenever we go if it's not in the right condition on that day). - Steve

thanks for all your info, ive read some books, but to me i want to see everything and that helps me remember it better. SO i was thinking about getting a guide, that way i'd see all the rigs, knots, etc being done, so itd be better. O.Mykiss well i live in portland with my mom mostly but i go out to my dads quite a bit to, and he lives very close to the timber jct. Off the Sunset hwy. I fish the nehalem alot (its about 20 yards from my dads backyard) Personally I cant see why ODFW says cutthroats are endangered cuz i catch alot, I still throw them back though. Anyway thanks for the invitation O.Mykiss maybe i will try to contact you while salmon are still here.

Winterkill, where do you live? I sometimes have an open seat in my boat and I would love to take a young person fishing that has a passion to learn something that I love. I live in Albany and if it's not to far from where you live maybe we can work something out. Let me know. Grant
