Hey fellow fishers. I've just stumbled onto some news! The Pacific Halibut Commission has scheduled the last all depth fishing day for Halibut on the Oregon coast for this year. That would be Sept. 22, Friday. This is pending Federal approval. I highly recommend this fishery since it is like going to the drive thru window at the burger joint. I'll have a Halibut and an Orange soda, to go! If you can get on a boat that is going to the Chicken Ranch, do it! The bend is your friend!

Pilar, sure like your input on this
board. Your posts are always informative and sometimes quite funny. Maybe I'll use that halibut tag I involuntarily purchased after all.

Thanks for your info Pilar, but it is no secret about the halibut, and you do not have to run 34 miles to tag out. There are more halibut on the pile right now and they are only 15 miles. I even had one day this year when we could not bottom fish because the halibut were so thick. And last year we were the first boat back to the dock on the Aug. opener (8:45am) with a 75 and a 101 pound fish. I have dropped a line several times this year after catching our salmon and they are always there. Just head to the south end and you will see the boats.
Oh by the way there are some nice chinooks on the pile, 3 days ago RJ and I tagged out with a 28, 25 ,20 and a 18.

OOPS! I almost forgot...you are right we do not own the fish, sea, sky and rocks, the Oregon Dept.of Fish and Wildlife own them and if we beg and plead maybe just maybe they MAY let us play thing them.

Right on Wak'm&Stak'm. Its no secret, I've also caught flattie at the Rockpile and been surprised every time. Got GPS #'s for that Halibut hole at the south end? How about some tips on bagging a deep troll chinook? Remember most of us work 5-6 days a week and don't have time to pillage your spot more than once. Thanking you in advance. The bend is your friend!

The chinooks we caught were between 80 and 120 feet, we used downriggers and fished about 30ft behind the ball with a dodger and a plug cut on 3 ft leader. The interesting part is that these fish were not fall fish, the eggs and sperm sacks were not even starting to mature, they were like 3 inches long. They were a real chunky fish.
The gps is in the boat but we were just inside the south end and there have been commercial boats there all month you can't miss them. I will get the numbers when I get back.

Thanx bro. The depth is the thing. Every time I deep drag herring I wonder if I'm on the right depth. I'll wait with bated breath for the #'s. I have some #'s for a pinnacle near the S. end. We hit Halibut near it a few times. The bend is your friend! Alright here's two spots I like.

Pinnacle 200 to 150 ft. Top not very big.
Lat. N44 29.481' Lon. W124 22.380'

Halibut near pinnacle. fish on flat ground.
Lat. N44 29.516' Lon. W124 22.407'

That's what my notes say in the logbook. Go forth and get bit. The bend is your friend!

Thanks Neutron, I'm doin' what I always do, just with an audience. I figure no one owns the earth, the water or the sky no matter how much they wish they did. For that reason, I am willing to share what I know or discover. If you really think you own that rock you're standing on, steelhead fishing, guess again. Some other guy is watching you with binoculars, he already knows what gear you're using and he'll be there on your rock, waiting for you tomorrow when you show up at 4 am. Well, you get the idea........ The bend is your friend!

P.S. When is the only time you know a fisherman is not lying? When you're watching him with binoculars! I'm the guy with the binoculars.
