I've heard that one side of the Deschutes is on Indian land and that you need a use permit Is this true? From the mouth of the river I think it's the right side (west)does anyone know how far up that side you can go and still be on public land? i'd like to bike up a few miles and camp/fish, any info would be appreciated..

There's a dirt road on the east side of the river that follows the river for miles. My son and I used to ride our mountain bikes up the road 5 or 6 miles and camp right on the edge of the river. I've ridden up as far as 10 miles, but believe that the road goes much further. There's lots of great water to fish, but watch for rattlesnakes. We ran into a number of them.
