I would like to know what compression to look for on a 6hp 1972 evinrude long shaft. We may buy this off a guy but he doesn't know what it is.It would be used for a kicker on a 15ft fiberform boat for trolling. Thanks

look for it to be 80 - 100 psi, main thing is that they are within 15% of being equal.

Not sure on yours but I just bought an 8hp Mariner off Craigs list. A friend of mine is a mechanic and had him comp. test it before buyiung it. It is a 1997 model and blew 115 and 120lbs and held on the two cylinders.
Started right up and purrrrrred, so bought it. Hope this helps!
If you get no answer I'll check with my friend and get back to you.

It depends on what kinda pistons and valves it has to get compression. As long as its not below 80psi and no more the 5lbs different between clinders you should be fine.
