I am trying to make a few plans since the ocean quota is about filled and I have one month before archery season. My question is this, last year was the bouy 10 quota about the same as this year, and it seems to me that it was much better a couple weeks into August, is this true? Or is it usually hot right from the opener?
Last year I got stuck working 14 days straight and it closed the first day I had off, and I am trying to NOT LET THAT HAPPEN AGAIN.
Thanks

I have fished buoy 10 since the mid 80's with excellent success in the early years and fair sucess since. Here's what happened last year: We started at buoy 10 on the 12th, 13th, and 14th of August and only caught 1 Chinook for all 3 days(too early) with a couple other strikes. The tides were good that weekend, but we and others did not do well.
We skipped the next weekend(our mistake) because the tides were not optimal. It turns out that was the weekend to be there, because they shut down Chinook fishing right after the next weekend, because the sportsmen were catching too many. An article in the Oregonian following that weekend proclaimed "the old days are back!!".
But by the next (Aug 27th) weekend it was hit and miss again. We fished 4 more days and only landed 3 fish. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif The kicker was that the coho were not there at all. If the coho show up like in the "old days" mid August, well into Sept can be excellent.
We plan to hit it this year starting Aug. 19th.
I hope to hear more on this subject.

At this point the sportsfishing quota for buoy 10 is for 6-8,000 chinook. One chinook per person per day. When the chinook quota is reached, then only hatchery coho can be kept. Supposedly they will not close Buoy 10 for coho. Since they are expecting 400,000 fin-clipped coho it should be a pretty good season. The final decision on the quotas will be determined on July 27th. Get after 'em.

Let's bring this back to the top.
I'm going to L.A. next week and will miss the opener, but let's have some good reports when I get back. It might be good at the start.
Can't wait to get down there.

If the silvers off Newport are Columbia bound fish they ahd best get moving, but OH MY are they the nicest grade of fish I am sure we had some accidently hook fish that were 13 to 14 pounds.

I just booked a trip with a charter with my roommate for Bouy 10 fishing on Aug 9th. Now Im wondering, after reading the above, if I didnt book too early? I only get one chance a year to do this and last year I was really disappointed as the charter from Tackle Time promised me bouy 10 but we never left the Astoria bridge area and got skunked too. Fish were being caught at bouy 10 but our captain didnt want to hassle with the crowds. There were other problems too that I wont go into now. SOOOOOOOO, this time a new charter co. tells me that we will fish bouy 10 or go out on the ocean depending on a few factors.
So, do any of you think I booked a bit too early???? Thanks for the wisdom to those who answer!

Oakie,
I don't think the ocean is still open, so hopefully you'll catch something in the estuary. It might be a little early, but you never know until the season opens up and you get some reports. Also, the fish may arrive early. Positive thoughts.

If I read right the ocean is still open up there. Closed fridays and saturdays so it looks like you're ok unless the coho quota is caught by then, after that you just move back inside the bouy line??

Thanks for the info! I think I will keep the Aug 9th trip and also sneak in one on a charter around the third week of Aug.

Oakie,
My son in law and I Fished the ocean out of Astoria on Sun. If the fishing is that good on the 9th. you won't have any trouble. Like shooting fish in a barrell. We didn't go out untill 10:30, back in by noon. 3 silvers and 1 'nook. (very foggy). The quota is not halfway yet, 37,500. You can keep track on the ODFW site under 2000 selective fishery. Crabbing was excellent also, 48 in two hours and very few females to deal with. Crabs were really hard and solid. Good luck
