I'm leaving town this afternoon for a few days with the family, staying near Lincoln City. I'll be watching my son play a couple of the days in the OGA Jr. golf tournament at Salashan. I would like to fish an evening or 2 up on the Siletz for summers; maybe in the canyon area. If anyone reading this before mid-afternoon can help with info, I would like to know if the canyon involves tough hiking? And if so, where else would there be decent concentrations of steelhead that are fairly easy to access from the bank? Thanks much. If the river fishing has slowed maybe I should take a half day out on a coho charter from Depot Bay? - I'll be back on in a few days. - RT

The hiking in the lower gorge, above Moonshine Park is fairly easy. You can park at the gate next to Wildcat bridge and walk(or bike) up the road. About 15-20 minutes up the road, there are a couple of good holes. The three mile stretch between the gate and and the steel bridge have various holes. You can try the bobber water or else hit the whitewater holes. There are no bait restrictions on the Siletz, unlike the other coastal rivers. There is a hook restriction of size 1 or larger, until Aug 1, when it opens for trout. Good luck.

I recently heard that the upper river was now closed 7 days a week. I don't know if it's just to vehicle traffic or foot traffic too, or if it's even true at all.... Joe

RT: try calling the Logsden store 444-2088 and check with them for current info on the road closure and what is going on. They also offer shuttles if you want to take your pontoon boat and float.
Good luck. Walt

Hey RT, how far are you from Hebo?

RT, I heard rumor that Chinook Bend on the Siletz tidewater posted their first King of the year Sunday. It's about 2 miles off of HWY 101 just South of Lincoln City. Better bring your bobber and eggs rod.

Hey thanks much guys. However, my elderly mother-in-law has gone into dire conditions so I'll only be taking my son to his tournament and coming home early to be with my wife. Next time in that area I'll get after them. Thanks. - RT
