Went Surf perch fishing with a fly rod and streamers over the weekend at Cape Lookout. Did best at low tide in the morning. Caught a couple and had a number of hits w/o hookups. Look for the deep spots (holes) as the water recedes and cast to them. Keep moving or the undertow will bury your feet in a flash. Lots of fun.

Where is Cape Lookout?
Are the perch still there?
Thanks for your response...

Cape Lookout is west of Tillamook. It forms the south end of Netarts Bay. There is a state park there and direct beach access. I would guess the perch will be there for a while.

Marko,
I haven't fished for red-tail in years. Down in Humboldt Bay we used to use sand crabs or mud worms. Have been told mud worms are not present this far north, are there sand crabs here? Another hot bait was to go down to the crab processing plants and get a cooler full of discarded backs. The lining inside the shell works well once you figure out how to keep it on the hook. The most important necessity when using either crab back or mud worms is a rag. However, both are awesome saltwater baits for either redtail or what I commonly refer to as jetty snacks.

Sandshrimp are a excellent bait also. Okie when you say rag...what do you mean regarding perch fishing. Is that a nylon bag to hold your bait?

Nope, just a rag to wipe your hands with. Both the crab back and mud worms are messy to use, but both will outfish shrimp for most inshore saltwater fish.
